The Shabbat before the Ninth of Av is called Shabbat Chazon ("Shabbat of Vision"), the third of the series of readings known as "The Three of Rebuke." On this Shabbat, say the Chassidic masters, we are granted a vision of the Third Temple; we may not see it with our physical eyes, but our souls see it.Links: The Holy Temple: an Anthology; Shabbat of Vision; About the "Three of Rebuke"
Because of the holiness of Shabbat, the Fast of the Ninth of Av mourning destruction of the Temple and the exile of Israel is postponed to after Shabbat. Therefore, the fast begins on Shabbos day, Saturday at sunset (8:19 pm in Houston), and continues through Sunday, Av 10, till nightfall (8:45 pm). After nightfall on Saturday (9:00 pm) we say, "Blessed is He who distinguishes between the holy and the mundane." No Havdalah is made, but we light a candle and recite the fire blessing.Havdalah is recited after the fast (omitting the candle and incense blessings).
"Eichah"--the Book of Lamentations--is read on Saturday night after evening prayers. It will be followed by a moving film, "With a Whole Broken Heart"
'With My Whole Broken Heart' is a new 45-minute film that features moving stories of valiant parents whose children's lives were claimed by terror and follows the lives of two of the youngest survivors of Auschwitz and Buchenwald. The film highlights the Jewish response to tragedy and suffering, conveying a message of hope and promise. - WATCH THE TRAILER
