➊ One ➋ Two ➌ Three

Thursday, 19 March, 2015 - 11:58 pm

Rarely do we take out three Torahs. Simchas Torah is the only day of the year that we always take out three Torahs, otherwise there needs to be a triple-play, as we have this week!

  1. The weekly Torah portion of Parshas Vayikra is read in six aliyos in the first Torah.
  2. The seventh aliya, we read from the second Torah, the section of the Torah describing the offerings brought on Shabbos that coincides with Rosh Chodesh, the first day of the Jewish month. (During the prayers, Hallel is recited before the Torah reading and a special Shabbos Rosh Chodesh Musaf is read after the Torah reading)
  3. In the third Torah, we read the section that is read on the Shabbat that falls on or before the 1st of Nissan, a special reading called "Hachodesh" (Exodus 12:1-20) as the maftir. Hachodesh recounts G-d's historic communication to Moses in Egypt on the 1st of Nissan (2 weeks before the Exodus) regarding the Jewish calendar, the month of Nissan and the Passover offeringLinks: The Reading for Hachodesh, From the teachings of the Chassidic masters on Hachodesh, About the Jewish calendarHaftorah in a Nutshell
