A PARSHA THOUGHT: This week we will read in Parshas Shemos: "These are the names of the Jewish people". Why the emphasis of names? The Midrash teaches that the Jewish people merited redemption from Egypt because they did not change their names, clothing or language. None of these three are commandments, but, they are what hold us together as a nation. These three characteristics make a nation stand apart to ensure their identity as a people. Names help us remember who we are. Clothing enwraps the person in a sense of "you are what you wear". Language creates a sense of unity, encouraging Jews to mingle with each other. May we all have the spirit to continue this sacred task and in that merit may we see Moshiach's arrival, now!
