Houston attorney, Batami Baskin, often works late hours. But, every Wednesday night at 8 she sits down to home-cooked dinner and animated conversation with friends at Chabad of Uptown, which caters to Jewish young professionals.

“We are a real mix of young people, ranging from grad students to 30-somethings,” said Baskin. “Every week, there is another theme. Rabbi Chaim and Chanie Lazaroff, who lead the sessions, do a real good job creating an inviting atmosphere where people are attracted to talk about Jewish topics.”

Guest Rabbi Lazer Lazaroff, of Aishel House, gives a class on abortion in Jewish law.

Recent classes ranged from heated debates on hot-button issues, such as the Judaic approach to abortion and national health care to a hands-on mezuzah crafting workshop. Baskin mentioned a session on the meaning of the Friday night prayers as especially resonant for her.

“It was nice to find the deeper meaning of what we pray for every week but, really every class is special in its own way – and of course, there’s the food, which is a major draw for us young professionals.”

A schedule of upcoming classes, as well as other information, can be obtained at www.chabaduptown.org/youngadults.
