Can I Bribe G-d with Charity?

Friday, 3 August, 2012 - 12:15 am

  •  Last Shabbos we were lucky to host the most amazing group of staff, the counselors of the Gan Israel Day Camp. This is the final week, of one of the best summers at camp our children have ever had.
  • Not an eye was dry through the night of Tisha B'av for the Eicha reading and film documentary of the 2005 Israel disengagement from Gaza. May we see Moshiach now, so next year we will not shed a tear, but rejoice.
  • Packed house for our class and pepper steak dinner on "Love, Lust & Romance & Knowing the Difference" as we prepared20120801_211624.jpg for this Friday's holiday of Tu B'av - The 15th of Av, a day of "Love & Rebirth". More about this romantic holiday, here.
  • Next week's young professionals class, now at 8 pm and with free dinner, will be "Judaism: Faith, Nationality or Ethnicity?" Don't miss it!
  • It is the first Friday of the month. All, young and old alike, are welcome to join us for Shabbat services. Shabbos dinner is our monthly "First Fridays" for Young Professionals, this month celebrating Tu B'Av with THE WHITE PARTY. We will begin with a "Holy Happy Hour" at 7:30 that will last a few minutes followed by services and THE WHITE PARTY! We look forward to a wonderful evening and Shabbos!
  • We now have Shacharis services on Sunday morning at 8:30 am followed by the regular BLT = Bagels, Lox & Tefillin. Join us!
  • Nicholas & Sandra Morgan invite the community to join them as they celebrate the Upshernish of their son, Binyamin (Inaugural hair cutting ceremony) this Sunday, Aug. 5 at noon at Chabad of Uptown. Lunch will be provided. RSVP here.

Can I Bribe G-d with Charity?

I often give tzedakah, charity, in memory of loved ones and people who have inspired me, but lately my motivations have changed. I've been donating to worthy causes in the hope of achieving something I yearn for and dream about - I want my daughter to get married. Is this still charity, or am I bribing G‑d?
