You've Been Pre-Approved!
"But rabbi, I'm not a member!"
Too often I find these words (or thoughts) behind a resistance to participate in any Shul – even on the High Holidays. Obviously our Shul has to be financially sustainable – but at what expense?
So, in consultation with our trustees, chairman and treasurer :) we are launching "Birthright Membership".
This High Holiday season, every single Jew in the Galleria, River Oaks and Memorial areas and beyond - regardless of financial abilities, knowledge of the Hebrew Language and irrespective of religious observance (or lack thereof) - is being offered free membership and seats at Chabad of Uptown.
That's right, no fees, dues payment for seats or anything of the sort – You've been Pre Approved (read below for details of Pre Approval).
Why? Because at the end of the day you already are a member of the Jewish People so your "membership" in Shul is a birthright.
(Please note; this offer is to anyone who is not a member at ours or any other Shul previously. If you are, we encourage you to continue your participation with your original community. )
So just go to our website, download and fill out the form and fax it in to confirm that you're on board.
Hoping to hear from you...
And on the subject of members and supporters, a very big thanks to the growing core of participating members of the Chai Club who keep us going, in every way.
Shabbat Chazon & Tisha B'Av Schedule
The Shabbat before the Ninth of Av is called Shabbat Chazon ("Shabbat of Vision") after the opening words of the day's reading from the prophets ("haftara"), which is the third of the series of readings known as "The Three of Rebuke." On this Shabbat, say the Chassidic masters, we are granted a vision of the Third Temple; we may not see it with our physical eyes, but our souls see it, and are empowered to break free of our present state of galut (exile and spiritual displacement) and bring about the Redemption and the rebuilding of the Temple. Friday, July 24 Links: Looking forward to seeing you! Rabbi Chaim & Chanie P.S. Please join the many others who joined our campaign for the "Chai Club"! Even your small monthly donation in multiples of (1-1000+ :)) Chai ($18+), helps Chabad of Uptown thrive! Please join today at www.chabadtexas.org/uptowndonate and check the "Chai Club" checkbox! Your little line item on your CC bill will go a long way to support Chabad!

Tisha B'Av observes the mourning the destruction of the Temple and the exile of Israel, (see "Today in Jewish History") we abstain from eating and drinking, bathing, the wearing of leather footwear, and marital relations--for the night and day of Av 9 (i.e., from sundown on Av 8 to nightfall on Av 9). It is customary to sit on the floor or a low seat until after mid-day on Thursday. Torah study is restricted to laws of mourning, passages describing the destruction of the Temple, and the like. The fast of Tishah B'Av begins this evening at sunset 8:17 . Some of the fast's mourning practices--such as refraining from Torah study other than texts related to the events and nature of the fast day--are observed beginning from midday today.
The final meal before the start of the fast, eaten shortly before sunset, is called seudah hamafseket. Only one cooked food is eaten at this meal, customarily an egg dipped in ashes.
"Eichah"--the Book of Lamentations--is read tonight in the synagogue after evening prayers.
The tefillin are worn only during the afternoon Minchah prayers. (For more laws and customs see link below.)
