What a beautiful Yom Tov with all night Torah study, 10 commandments and decadent dairy buffets!
This week’s Torah portion continues the discussion about the function of the Levite tribe in the Beis Hamikdash (the Temple). In addition to each Levite family having a specific job when it came to taking down and assembling the traveling sanctuary in the desert, the general capacity in which they served was to be available to serve at all times.
Any work done in the Beis Hamikdash had to be done by Levites, and the entire tribe as a whole was dedicated to this general cause. It is for this reason that they were not given a specific portion in the Land of Israel, and instead they depended on the tithes given by their fellow Jews to Hashem, which was in turn transferred to the Levites. Because their lives were entirely dedicated to serving Hashem, their livelihood was provided to them entirely by Hashem.
Although this was specifically for those from the tribe of Levi, there is a lesson for all Jews here too: We can also commit ourselves to serving Hashem in our daily lives, mindfully devoting ourselves to Torah study and mitzvah observance beyond what we may think we are capable of. And by doing so, we too are promised that all our needs will be tended to By Hashem Himself.
The more we commit ourselves to this task, the greater the blessings we receive from Above!
