Elul - prep for the holidays

Friday, 19 August, 2022 - 12:31 pm

This Shabbos is already Shabbos mevarchim Elul! At this time of year we hold our annual Shul membership drive.  In keeping with the teaching of the Torah that has become a hallmark of Chabad worldwide that "all Jews are one family", we recognize every fellow Jew as a member of our Shul. Our services, including the High Holidays, are open to all and a warm seat is waiting for you. In order to create a financially secure platform for the ongoing activities of the Shul, there is an opportunity to participate as a member with annual feesOur High Holidays website has been launched with the complete holiday schedule, opportunities to become or renew your membership, optional reserved seats, make reservations for holiday dinners or lunches and special rates at area hotels. Thank you for your support at this time and all year round!

The entire book of Devarim is considered Moshe Rabbeinu's last will and testament in the weeks before his passing. It is where he recounts the events of the previous 40 years, and offers subtle rebuke to the Jews of that generation for their various missteps.

In this week’s Torah portion, in addition to mentioning various sins the nation committed over the years, Moshe Rabbeinu makes a very clear statement: “Man does not live on bread alone, but by the utterance of G‑d’s mouth….”

He was reminding the generation that would be entering the Land of Israel and beginning to see the fruits of their labor in the coming years, that ultimately everything depends on Hashem’s blessings. Yes, we must work to earn a living and support our families—we can’t just sit around and wait for things to happen—but we must also recognize that ultimately, our success is in His hands.

Faith does not mean sitting back and expecting miracles; it means believing that Hashem’s will help you succeed in doing what you are good at. But at the same time, we must not become complacent and forget where our blessings really come from—“the utterance of Hashem’s mouth.”

Good Shabbos!
