This week, Chaya and Rabbi Chaim and Seth Weisberg, were in Washington DC attending the Living Legacy Conference chaired by Rabbi Levi Shemtov of American Friends of Lubavitch. The conference marks 120 years since the Rebbe’s birth, as well as Education and Sharing Day U.S.A. Programs reflect upon the past decades and the lifetime of the Rebbe, as the Jewish people seek guidance and inspiration from his leadership for the unprecedented challenges of our time.

A dazzling array of members of both Houses and government officials from both sides of the aisle were in attendance on Capitol Hill in the caucus room of Russel State Office Building. Each delivering their own remarks, guests included Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY); Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Roy Blunt (R-MO), Rick Scott (R-FL), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Ted Cruz (R-TX); House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Michelle Steel (R-CA), Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN), Claudia Tenney (R-NY), Dusty Johnson (R-SD), Madison Cawthorn (R-NC), Lee Zeldin (R-NY) and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL). Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY) attended, but left before he was able to speak at the event. Also attending the program were diplomats from Morocco, Germany, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Qatar and other countries.

The program included academic presentations at the Library of Congress by Supreme Court of Western Australia Justice Rabbi Marcus Solomon and Dr. Tali Loewenthal of the University College London (UCL).

Over lunch at the St. Regis guests heard from Rabbi Jonathan Markovich, Chief Rabbi of Kyiv,  David Malpass, president of the World Bank Group; Anne Neuberger, an observant Jewish woman who serves as the deputy national security advisor for Cyber and Emerging Technology in the Biden Administration; Stuart Eizenstat, former U.S. ambassador to the European Union and deputy secretary of the Treasury and is currently the Chairman for United States Holocaust Memorial Council.

The day concluded with a dinner including talks from William C. Daroff. CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations; Natan Sharansky, Israeli human rights activist and chair of Babyn Yar Memorial Center; and former Sen. Joe Lieberman; among others and ended with a concert with Avraham Fried.

Some memorable quotes:

Cory Booker described his inspiration is culls from the Rebbe as one my his heros and how he shares that with others, "I am the Rebbe's unofficial shliach to the Goyim!"

Joe Lieberman in describing the feeling he personally had when catching the Rebbe's eye to say Lchaim at the Rebbe's farbrengen said, "When we do a Mitzva now, that’s how we catch the Rebbe’s eye”
