It's time to sing thanks!

Friday, 29 January, 2021 - 1:32 pm

This week we were again able to reflect and sing on how Plaza thankful we are for all those that enabled the building of the outdoor plaza to be able to host in-person and safe programming! On Tu Beshvat our weekly YJP Wednesday class & dinner was transformed into a spiritually infused mixology class, with insight into the relevance of the "New Year for Trees". Next week, we will host the covid-safe YJP First Fridays on the Plaza...

Purim is coming up! This year it will be Erev Shabbos... Mark your calendars to celebrate Purim on Thursday night and Friday, Feb. 26 & 27.

  • On Thursday night, Feb. 26, after the megillah reading for all, we will have YJP Purim Magic, physically distanced and individually packaged food - on the Plaza! www.yjphouston.org/purimmagic
  • Friday morning Feb. 27 we will have our 6:45 am Purim Shacharis and Megillah reading.
  • For the community megillah reading, we need your help! We have gone around the block thinking of all kinds of ways to host Purim this year with it being on Erev Shabbos and during COVID... We realized this is for YOU (and your families)... So, have your say! When should the Chabad of Uptown Purim Megillah reading and covid-safe community party be on Friday, February 26? PLEASE VOTE! https://www.poll-maker.com/poll3382001xf3CE49e5-103

This week is Shabbos Shira as the Torah reading contains the "song at the sea" sung by the Children of Israel upon their deliverance from the Egyptians, when the Red Sea split to allow them to pass and then drowned their pursuers. Hence this Shabbat is designated as Shabbat Shirah, "Shabbat of song." Our sages tell us that the birds in the sky joined our ancestors in their singing; for this reason it is customary to put out food for the birds for this Shabbat (to avoid the possibility of transgressing the laws of Shabbat, the food should be put out before Shabbat).
