This Shabbos is known as "Shabbos Selichos", when we kick off a series of Selichot ("supplication") prayers recited in preparation for the "Days of Awe" of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur beginning this Saturday night, after midnight (after the Ashkenazic custom; the Sephardic community begins on the 1st of Elul). On subsequent days, the custom is to recite the Selichot in the early morning hours, before the morning prayers, each morning up to and including Elul 29, the eve of Rosh Hashanah. Please let us know if we can count on you for the Selichos minyan this Saturday night at 1:20 am Tishrei, the month of the High Holidays, Days of Awe and Days of Joy are HERE! Chabad of Uptown looks forward to celebrating the High Holidays with you. Since the onset of the pandemic, we have done all we can to provide a safe environment for the community to daven and celebrate. For the increased attendance expected on the High Holidays we will ask all to please use a facemask so everyone can feel comfortable. If you do not feel comfortable attending the services indoors, we recommend that you please attend the 12:30 pm Shofar blowing times on both days, when we will have a Shofar service on the outdoor patio. You may also want to attend the outdoor Tashlich walk, that leaves the shul at 7 pm. The shofar will be blown at the Tashliach service as well. For the complete schedule of services, to RSVP for holiday dinners or lunches, visit www.chabaduptown.org/services. Now is also the time to join or renew your voluntary membership to Chabad. Your partnership allows us to provide free, open and welcoming services to all, for the holidays and year round! Torah Siyum news & photos!
JEWISH HERALD VOICE, FRONT PAGE: Dozens of Jewish community members joyfully marched with a police escort near The Galleria on Sunday, Aug. 15, welcoming a new special member to Chabad of Uptown. A brand-new Torah – commissioned in Houston, written in Israel and dedicated in memory of a dear friend in South Africa – made its way down the 610 feeder to Westcreek Lane and to its eventual home on Bettis Drive. “With great pomp and fanfare we completed the Torah and welcomed it to our shul,” Chabad of Uptown Rabbi Chaim Lazaroff told the JHV. ANASH.ORG: A Siyum and Hachnosas Sefer Torah was held this Sunday at Chabad of Uptown & YJP Houston, but the story behind it began years earlier, with a different Sefer Torah in South Africa. In 2013, Maurice Purcell travelled from Houston to visit his hometown of Cape Town, South Africa, and spent some time with his childhood friend Ronnie Levy. Read more.... Elul is here!
Chassidic master Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi likens the month of Elul to a time when "the king is in the field" and, in contrast to when he is in the royal palace, "everyone who so desires is permitted to meet him, and he receives them all with a cheerful countenance and shows a smiling face to them all." Specific Elul customs include the daily recitation of Psalm 27 L'David Hashem Ori and daily sounding of the shofar as a call to repentance. The Baal Shem Tov instituted the custom of reciting three additional chapters of Psalms each day, from the 1st of Elul until Yom Kippur. Elul is also the time to have one's tefillin and mezuzahs checked by an accredited scribe to ensure that they are in good condition and fit for use. Let us know if you want help with this! Links: More on Elul Good Year Greetings From the beginning of Elul and throughout the High Holiday season, we include the blessing "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year" (Leshanah tovah tikateiv veteichateim) in letters and greetings to one another. Why would G-d need to send a prophet to test us and find out what He surely already knows? more… SHABBOS MEVARCHIM ELUL PARSHAS RE'EH Friday, 28 Av - August 6 Shabbos 29 Av - August 7 Sunday, Rosh Chodesh Elul I, 30 Av - August 8 Monday, Rosh Chodesh Elul II, 1 Elul, - August 9
Elul is Here! - This Shabbos we bless the new month of Elul and it is also Erev Chodesh. You can start to feel the Elul winds cool the summer down as we begin to get ready for the holidays. As the last month of the Jewish year, Elul is traditionally a time of introspection and stocktaking -- a time to review one's deeds and spiritual progress over the past year and prepare for the upcoming "Days of Awe" of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. As the month of Divine Mercy and Forgiveness it is a most opportune time for teshuvah ("return" to G-d), prayer, charity, and increased Ahavat Yisrael (love for a fellow Jew) in the quest for self-improvement and coming closer to G-d.
