Rosh Hashana kicked off a year of unity, with uplifting services, tears and laughter. Rabbi Daniel Gavin did an amazing job leading, the community pleading, our collective hearts bleeding with meaning, singing and ringing in the New Year of #Hakhel.

Mendel and Rabbi visited the Ohel during these Ten Days of Awe, and had a wonderful opportunity to watch his carefully selected tefillin boxes and parchments get assembled followed by watching Rabbi Chaim and his father carefully select Esrogim for the community.

This Shabbos is called "Shabbos Shuva" as part of the Ten Days of Repentance, and includes special readings in the prayers and Haftorah. It also marks 6 Tishrei, the yartzeit of the Rebbe's mother, Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson. We look forward to seeing you in Shul.

Dear Friends,

Prayers are like a cordless phone, you can use it anywhere. The advantage of prayer is, you don't have to worry about recharging it.

Or do you?

If I prayed yesterday, why do I need to pray today? If I prayed Shacharis this morning, why do I need to pray two more times, Mincha and Maariv? On Shabbos we add Musaf and on Yom Kippur we add a fifth prayer of Neilah. It seems like the prayer battery is in constant need for a recharge as much as, or even more than, a smartphone!

Prayer is like food for the body and soul. A healthy diet include three daily meals. The soul yearns to be fed with prayer. During prayer, while the body thanks Hashem for the creative life it has been given, the soul is connecting to its source, the spiritual supply for all of existence. Conversely, while the soul is connecting in ecstasy, the body tethers it to a world of physical activity and creativity.

As we pray, we peel away layers of physical distraction to bring about its true spiritual awareness. Yet, we also become acutely aware that without a physical existence, spiritual purpose can not be fulfilled.

Kabbala teaches of the five dimensions that make up the soul. The outer layers of Nefesh, Ruach and Neshama and inner facets of Chaya and Yechida.

Three times daily, we examine the first three levels of the soul. On Shabbos, we add a fourth prayer of Musaf, reaching the level of Chaya, fueling the week to come. Finally, on Yom Kippur, we pray five times, closing the day with Neilah. The fifth soul dimension of Yechida is the untouchable and perfect part of the soul that no matter what may have happened, can never be severed. On Yom Kippur we are given the opportunity to reach deep with ourselves to emerge with a perfect and wholesome soul, harmonized with the body, for a year filled with perfection and purpose.

As we bring in the New Year with the prayers of the High Holy Days, may we succeed to find this marriage of soul and body, to know our physical needs, understand their spiritual purpose and fulfill their true creative objectives.

Check out this project that our son Mendel Lazaroff has taken on to publish in time for his friend's first yartzeit.

He composed, wrote and performed a song of hope, giving thanks for another day, in memory of his forever thankful friend Mendel Cotlar, supporting GSD research.

This past Sunday-Monday, many Texas shluchim families gathered in College Station at the Chabad of Texas A&M for 24 hours of relaxation, sharing and inspiration. There is a rivalry who enjoyed more the adults or the kids!
