does this make cents? #TzedakaConnect #CONNECT10N

The mitzvah we are profiling this week is Tzedakah.

Although commonly understood to mean charity, the real translation is justice from the root word "צדק".

This sheds light on the age-old Jewish value of giving. It answers a simple question, "Why should I give away my hard earned money?"

In truth, G-d blesses us with the money that we have and entrusts us with these funds to act as his custodian to do good with them. When we understand this, giving is the correct and just thing to do, not only the kind thing to do.

Beginning your day with thinking of others sets the tone for the entire day.

A coin dropped into a Pushka - Charity Box - is a flex of your giving muscle.

#TzedakaConnect #CONNECT10N

Practically speaking:

  • Place a Pushka in your house, car, or at work, and  transform that space into a center of kindness.
  • Give daily, even just a small coin. It’s the gift that benefits both the recipient and the giver.
  • Put a few coins in every Friday before lighting Shabbos candles, today in Houston before 7:57 pm.
  • We have charity boxes at Chabad of Uptown for pickup anytime that works for you.
  • Leave behind a legacy in your will. This will be your final mitzvah on Earth that will be giving forever and also let your family family know what Jewish charity/charities are most important to you.
  • Join the Chabad of Uptown Chai Club monthly giving circle at www.chabaduptown.org/donate

This Shabbos is called Shabbat Chazon ("Shabbat of Vision") named after the opening words of the day's Haftorah reading. On this Shabbat, say the Chassidic masters, we are granted a vision of the Third Temple; we may not see it with our physical eyes, but our souls see it, and are empowered to break free of our present state of galut and bring about the Redemption and the rebuilding of the Temple. May it be speedily! Links:  The Holy Temple: an Anthology Shabbat of Vision About the " Three of Rebuke".

Tisha B'av is observed this Wednesday night and Thursday. The final meal before the start of the fast, eaten shortly before sunset, is called seudah hamafseket. Only one cooked food is eaten at this meal, customarily an egg dipped in ashes. During this fast, that begins in Houston at 8:16 pm on Wednesday, we abstain from eating and drinking, bathing, the wearing of leather footwear, and marital relations. It is customary to sit on the floor or a low seat until after mid-day on Thursday. Torah study is restricted to laws of mourning, passages describing the destruction of the Temple, and the like. The tefillin are worn only during the afternoon Minchah prayers. For the complete Tisha B'av schedule, see below. Link:  Laws of Tish'ah B'Av

Classes: In observance of Tisha B'av the weekly Wednesday night and Thursday classes are suspended.

have answers? #TorahConnect #CONNECT10N

Torah can refer to just the Five Books of Moses, but the term is also used to refer to the entire body of Jewish wisdom. Torah literally means “instructions.” It also means “light.” Torah is meant to shine a light on life and show you which way to go. Whatever you learn, you can always find a practical application and make it happen. Explore your inheritance. Make the CONNECT10N! Ask the questions, get the answers! Click on the videos for two examples of how Torah has relevance to our lives!

Here are a four of many ways to pick up that wisdom even during these times of coronavirus —and let the Torah pick you up:

  1. Join a Torah class, chabaduptown.org/learn. Join our live online Zoom classes at chabaduptown.org/liveclass
  2. Get online to a Torah learning website, like www.chabaduptown.org/search
  3. Study one-on-one with a scholar at JNet.
  4. Get into some of those books you got last week.

This Wednesday is Rosh Chodesh Av. "When Av begins, we diminish [our] rejoicing" (Talmud, Taanit 26b). A heightened degree of mourning is observed, including abstention from meat and wine, music, bathing for pleasure, and other joyous and enjoyable activities. Citing the verse (Isaiah 1:27) "Zion shall be redeemed with mishpat [Torah] and its returnees with Tzedakah," the Rebbe urged that we increase in Torah study (particularly the study of the laws of the Holy Templeand charity during this period. Links: When and (How) to be Sadwww.thethreeweeks.com.

Thursday was the Fast of 17th of Tammuz that marks the beginning of The Three Weeks period of mourning which culminates on the 9th of Av, commemorating the conquest of Jerusalem, the destruction of the Holy Temple and the dispersion of the Jewish people. Weddings and other joyful events are not held during this period; like mourners, we do not cut our hair, and various pleasurable activities are limited or proscribed. The Lubavitcher Rebbe urged that the Three Weeks should be a time of increased giving of charity and Torah study (in keeping with the verse (Isaiah 1:27), "Zion shall be redeemed by law, and her returnees by charity"), particularly the study of those portions of Torah that deal with the laws and the deeper significance of the Holy Temple. Links: TheThreeWeeks.comSome Laws and Customs of the Three Weeks, About Holy Temple

The Zealot

Pinchas' deed evokes many associations -- courage, decisiveness and religious passion are several that come to mind -- but peace hardly seems one of them. Pinchas, after all, killed two people. So why does the Torah describe him as a man of peace? To understand Pinchas' place in the Jewish consciousness, we first need to understand the Torah's conception of the "zealot" (kana'i). Is violence ever a positive trait? Is the zealot the ultimate altruist, or just an angry young (or old) man who has found a holy outlet for his aggression? more…

Waters of Strife

A common denominator in all the explanations of the “Waters of Strife” incident is the implication that whatever the problem was, that wasn’t really the problem. Basically, G‑d is getting Moses on a technicality. more…
