This Shabbos is Av 20, the yartzeit (anniversary of the passing) of the Lubavitcher Rebbe's father, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson (1878-1944), in Alma Ata, Kazakhstan. Rabbi Levi Yitzchak was Chief Rabbi of Yekaterinoslav (currently Dnepropetrovsk), and was arrested and exiled to Kazakhstan by the Stalinist regime as a result of his work to preserve Jewish life in the Soviet Union.

A Brief Biography
Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson's biography, which includes her account of her husband's heroism, arrest and passing.
On 20 Av, exactly twenty years ago, it was also a Shabbos. That year, in honor of my bar-mitzvah, I had the privilege to spend a few hours a mere few feet from the Rebbe's presence at his public farbrengen (public address) in honor of this day, and receive an aliya immediately prior to his. On the following day the Rebbe wished me and my father personal blessings in honor of the occasion. A clip of it appears quickly in the beginning of the "Bar Mitzvah" Living Torah video clip here.
