are you a leader?

This week’s Torah portion tells the story of Korach’s rebellion against Moses and Aaron. At its core, Korach’s argument was cloaked in spiritual rhetoric: “All of the nation is holy, why do you lift yourselves above everyone else?” While this claim sounded democratic and idealistic, it was rooted in ego and a misunderstanding of true leadership.

Korach failed to see that holiness isn’t diminished by the presence of a leader—it’s elevated by it. A true leader doesn’t dominate others; he inspires them to discover their own potential.

Sunday is the 3rd of Tammuz, the yahrzeit of the Rebbe. The Rebbe was the ultimate example of a leader whose entire being was dedicated to uplifting others. Like Moshe Rabbeinu, he carried the burden of the nation, cared for every individual, and saw within each Jew a divine spark waiting to be ignited.

The Rebbe taught us that leadership isn’t about standing above others—it’s about helping each person rise. On this day, let’s recommit to living with the Rebbe’s vision, to be leaders in our own homes and communities, and to bring more light into the world.

May we merit to see the fulfillment of the Rebbe’s vision with the coming of Moshiach now.

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie Lazaroff

THE COHEN CORNER
Comparison is the thief of joy

Korach was a Levite, distinguished and respected, already entrusted with holy responsibilities. But instead of appreciating his role, he fixated on what others had, specifically, the priesthood given to Aharon. Cloaking his envy in the language of equality and justice, Korach demanded more. Dissatisfaction often begins not with injustice, but with a refusal to see the value in our own portion.

Korach’s tragic end is not just about rebellion, but about the danger of living someone else’s mission. As the Rebbe often taught, every soul is sent into the world with a unique role that no one else can fill. Fulfillment is not found in climbing higher on someone else's ladder, but in standing tall on your own. Your life, your challenges, your talents, and your relationships, are the setting for your divine purpose. When we stop chasing what isn’t ours and embrace what is, we discover a sense of meaning, peace, and spiritual wealth that no title or position could ever replace.

Have a spectacular Shabbos!

Rabbi Yosef, Chanale & Mushka Cohen

Missiles and Miracles

This week’s Parsha, Shelach, recounts the tragic episode of the spies. Sent by Moshe Rabbeinu to explore the Land of Israel, ten of them returned overwhelmed by fear, focusing only on the threats and obstacles. Their panic spread to the nation, leading to decades of delay and loss. Only Yehoshua and Calev held their ground, insisting that with Hashem’s promise, we had nothing to fear.

Their voices still echo today.

Since Simchas Torah of last year, Israel has faced a brutal war. And just this past week alone, over 520 ballistic missiles and 400 drones were launched at our people, with more than 50 direct impacts. Twenty-four were killed, more than 1,200 wounded, and over 30,000 property damage claims have already been filed. More than 8,000 people have been evacuated from their homes.

And yet, again and again, we are seeing open miracles.

Yesterday in Be’er Sheva, Iran targeted Soroka Medical Center — the only major hospital in Israel’s entire southern region, serving over a million people. A direct hit struck the surgical building. Just one day earlier, the top floors had been evacuated. Had the missile landed ten hours earlier, the outcome would have been catastrophic. Even more chilling: if it had veered just a few feet, it would have landed in the maternity ward filled with women in active labor who hadn’t yet made it to shelter.

Instead, out of thousands of patients and staff on site, only five suffered minor injuries.

And amidst the rubble, something beautiful happened. Survivors lined up not just to tell their stories, but to put on tefillin and thank Hashem. One patient, Oren, who had only recently begun donning tefillin again after years, looked at the rabbi and said, “I put tefillin on my head every day—and that’s why my head was spared.”

This is not just a military campaign—it is a moment of awakening. A moment where the fire of faith shines brighter than the flames of war.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe taught that Eretz Yisrael is constantly watched over by Hashem, “from the beginning of the year to the end of the year,” and that when we act with clarity and faith, Hashem responds with revealed good. What we are seeing now is just that: miracles of Biblical proportions.

Let us take these moments to strengthen our emunah, to appreciate the miracles around us, and to rededicate ourselves to the values and mitzvos that sustain us.

Last night, the spirit of unity and prayer was alive at Chabad of Uptown. Thirty women gathered to braid challah and daven for the safety of Israel, while others joined Rabbi Chaim in a meaningful session learning The Heart of Prayer. Together, we uplifted each other—and our people—with faith, action, and connection.

May we merit continued protection for our brothers and sisters, peace for Eretz Yisrael, and the ultimate Geulah, now.

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie Lazaroff

THE COHEN CORNER
Not all those who wander are lost

In this week’s Torah portion, we read about the punishment given to the generation that accepted the spies’ negative report about the Land of Israel. Rather than settling in one place, they were made to wander the desert for forty years. At first glance, this seems like an added cruelty, why force them to live a life of constant movement and upheaval? But the Midrash reveals a deeper purpose. Wherever the Israelites camped, the land flourished. Their journey through the desert brought life and holiness to barren places, transforming the wilderness into something meaningful. Their wandering was not just a consequence of sin, but a mission of spiritual renewal.

This idea carries a profound message for our own lives. Each of us encounters moments that feel like wandering, times of confusion, regret, or hardship that seem disconnected from any clear purpose. But the Torah teaches that these deserts in our lives are not empty. They are opportunities to bring growth and meaning to places that feel broken or unimportant. Even when we find ourselves in difficult circumstances, we are not there by accident. With the right perspective and effort, those very challenges can become the ground on which something beautiful and lasting is built.

Have a delightful Shabbos!

Rabbi Yosef, Chanale & Mushka Cohen

Do a Mitzvah for Israel

A strike against Iran and sirens blaring in Israel. Our extended Jewish family is in danger. And every Jew is asking him or herself: What can I do to help? Is there anything we can do? Most of us are hundreds or thousands of miles away, in our own communities. Yet our very being cries out: What can we do? The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, taught us that yes, there is something we can do. The Rebbe taught us the power of a mitzvah. more…

Daven for Operation Rising Lion

While our enemies slept, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, one of the boldest and broadest preemptive strikes in the history of modern warfare, taking out much of Iran’s nuclear program, military brass, and who knows what else.

Just 24 hours ago, Iran was a dangerous and bellicose enemy on the cusp of nuclear capability. Today, it is in complete disarray.

Baruch Hashem!

The stage was carefully set, the brave soldiers of the IDF were meticulously prepared, and millions around the world prayed for success. For we know that our triumphs come from G‑d, who blesses the Jewish people wherever they may be with His “full, open, holy, wide hand.”

What a moment of gratitude this is for every single Jew!

We believe that we express the feeling of every peace-loving human being when we thank Hashem for His protection and kindness thus far (was it a coincidence that the prime minister had prayed in a tallis at the Kotel on the afternoon of the attack?), and we pray with faith and confidence that Hashem will continue to protect our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land and around the world.

In the words of King David, “Praise Hashem for [He is] good, for His kindness is everlasting.”

Let’s continue to add in tzedaka, prayer, and Torah study in complete faith and confidence that “the guardian of Israel neither sleeps nor slumbers” and will continue to protect His people in Israel and around the world.

And let us pray that Iran’s remaining leaders finally give up their evil aspirations of destroying Israel, and instead build a prosperous country that the Iranian people truly deserve.

With prayers for a peaceful Shabbos around the world,

Good Shabbos!

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie Lazaroff

THE COHEN CORNER
Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.

In Behaalotecha, the Torah commands two trumpet blasts for two very different moments: one for war, “When you go to war… blow a long blast,” and one for peace, “On your days of rejoicing… you shall blow the trumpets” (Bamidbar 10:9–10). One stirs courage against danger; the other awakens us in times of comfort. Both are calls to act with purpose and spiritual focus. This dual message was embodied by the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn. In Soviet Russia, he risked his life to preserve Judaism under oppression. In free America, he fought a quieter battle against apathy and assimilation. He taught that the call to spiritual vigilance must sound in both crisis and calm. In struggle, press forward. In peace, keep growing.

As the self defense mission in Iran unfolds, we are reminded to act. In merit of those defending our people, let each of us take on an extra mitzvah, whether lighting Shabbat candles, giving tzedakah, putting on tefillin, or studying more Torah. Just as our soldiers fight with courage, we strengthen them with faith. May our actions echo like a shofar, bringing merit, protection, and peace to all who defend Am Yisrael.

Have a wonderful Shabbos!

Rabbi Yosef, Chanale & Mushka Cohen

how much is ONE?

We often wonder: Can one person really make a difference?

Last Shabbos, the Lazaroff clan gathered from across the country and around the world for a beautiful family reunion in College Station. One couple. One impact. One legacy. Generations of strong, proud Jews. A powerful reminder that each of us can build warm, bright, robust Jewish homes and help carry forward the light of Am Yisrael.

This message resonates deeply as we emerge from Shavuos, having just celebrated receiving the Torah. And now, in this short week, we read the longest parsha in the entire Torah.

Why is Naso so long? One major reason is the repetition of the offerings brought by the twelve tribal leaders for the dedication of the Mishkan. They each brought the exact same gifts—yet the Torah describes each one in full detail, again and again.

Why? Because even when the act is identical, the intention and individual behind it make it unique. Hashem cherishes the personal effort behind every offering, every mitzvah, every prayer—even when we’re all saying the same words.

So don’t get distracted by what others are or aren’t doing. Your connection to Hashem is precious, personal, and powerful.

Good Shabbos!

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie Lazaroff

THE COHEN CORNER
The sacred is woven into the fabric of everyday life, waiting for us to recognize it.

This week’s Torah portion introduces the nazir, someone who takes a vow of holiness by avoiding wine, the dead, and haircuts. Shimshon, the most famous nazir, lost his strength when his vow was broken. Interestingly, when a nazir completes their vow, they must bring atonement offerings. The Talmud explains that even voluntary self-denial, like abstaining from wine, can be seen as rejecting the goodness Hashem placed in the world.

Judaism teaches that holiness comes not from withdrawing from the material world but from engaging with it meaningfully. Unlike traditions that promote asceticism, Judaism encourages transforming the physical into the spiritual through mitzvot. A theme that threads through the Shavuot holiday, the nazir’s atonement reminds us that our goal is not to escape the world but to elevate it. So enjoy the wine, make kiddush, and say “L’Chaim” with intention.

Have a fantastic Shabbos!

Rabbi Yosef, Chanale & Mushka Cohen
