the great escapes

This Shabbos, we come together to mark a momentous anniversary on the Chabad calendar. On the 12th of Tammuz in 1927, a defining event took place in the history of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement. The previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, was released from imprisonment in the Soviet Union after being arrested and tried in absentia for his “counter revolutionary” activities, namely his insistence on continuing to support Jewish education and schools, which had been banned and shut down by the communist regime.

This day holds immense significance as it symbolizes the perseverance of the Jewish people, the continuity of our faith, and the triumph of hope in the face of adversity. The government saw the Rebbe's dedication to supporting underground Jewish schools as a threat to their ideals, resulting in the imprisonment, exile, and even execution of many teachers and rabbis who were committed to preserving our traditions and heritage.

Miraculously, through international pressure and the resilience of the Jewish community, the Rebbe's exile was short-lived, and on the 12th of Tammuz, he was granted freedom. His escape from exile wasn't just a personal victory; it was a profound moment that impacted the entire Jewish nation. As we look back on this historical event, we can now see that the liberation experienced then has had a lasting impact on Judaism worldwide and for generations to come.

The same oppressive regime that imprisoned and exiled the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe also affected our own family. Rabbi Chaim's grandfather and great grandfather were arrested, persecuted and killed in Russia. Chanie's own father Rabbi Shlomo Galperin was among the courageous Russian Chassidim who remained trapped behind the iron curtain in the Soviet Union for many years and endured years of separation and uncertainty. It is a testament to the strength of their faith and determination that he was finally granted the ability to escape to freedom and leave Russia in 1971. As we commemorate the Rebbe's release on this day, we also celebrate the triumph of our family's journey to freedom, cherishing the personal connection this day holds for Chanie and her family as well.

Today, every Chabad House and all the activities of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement around the world stand as a testament to the miracles of that day. It showcases the indomitable strength of the Jewish people and the unwavering commitment of our revered leaders, from the previous Rebbe to our current Rebbe, who have ensured that every Jewish child has the opportunity to receive an education imbued with the spirit of our holy Torah.

As we celebrate this significant anniversary, let us remember the importance of perseverance, unity, and the enduring power of faith. Together, we continue to thrive and pass on the traditions of our ancestors. May we persevere until the day of true and ultimate liberation with the coming of Moshiach.

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

Mazel tov to Omri Shafran and Anat Friedman and the entire family on the bar mitzvah of Eyal Shafran! It was a very meaningful moment shared at the Kotel as we celebrated his Bar Mitzvah together!

Rabbi Chaim also used the opportunity to visit the Alumim Youth Village from Zhitomir Ukraine now located in Ashkelon after a harrowing escape and evacuation on Feb. 24, 2022 through the Carpathian Mountains, Romania and landing in Israel on March 6, 2022.

Of course, it was was wonderful to visit our son Mendel, his brother Shmuly, Hayley and family and nephew Menachem & Shterna, all in Jerusalem. For a little fun, Mendel & Rabbi took a plunge with the longest zip-line in Israel spanning 600 meters across over Paradise Valley, 120 meters up in the air, over a spectacular ravine looking over the Judean Hills.

Wonderful kickoff of the new pop-up lunch and learn class yesterday! Stay tuned for future opportunities! If you have a topic you would like to learn about, please do let us know and we will try to cover it in a future class.

Last chance for the discounted registration for the JLI retreat! We have our tickets booked and are happy to share the itinerary with you! heaven, hell and afterlife....

Marking the Rebbe’s yahrtzeit this week, we are reminded of the Rebbe’s love and care for every single Jew, wherever he or she may be. This feeling of connection to all Jews is what continues to be the driving force behind the Chabad-Lubavitch movement today, as young emissaries set out to start Chabad Houses around the world, and existing centers experience tremendous growth.

The Rebbe believed in the value of every individual Jew, and every mitzvah done by any Jew. No Jew and no mitzvah is considered too small, and the Rebbe wanted us to ensure that this message becomes the focal point of all that Chabad does.

We keep the Rebbe's legacy alive through continuing the mission he entrusted us with, to prepare the world for the coming of Moshiach – one mitzvah at a time – may it be very soon!

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

eve of inspiration this wed

THIS THURSDAY IS GIMMEL TAMMUZ - THE REBBE'S YARTZEIT
Over twenty five years after the Rebbe's passing, his presence is felt stronger than ever. His teachings continue to inspire and guide us, and his insights remain as fresh and relevant as if they were given today. Each of us is a beneficiary of the Rebbe's inspiration in one way or another, and our lives are affected by his visionary leadership.

This Wednesday night & Thursday Gimmel Tammuz, on the anniversary of his passing (June 22), let's celebrate the Rebbe's vision. Let's honor his life's mission to bring goodness and kindness into this world. Let's do one more mitzvah, one more good deed, to make this world a better place.

Chanie will lead an "Evening of Inspiration" on Wednesday night at 7:30 pm. Open to whole community. Dinner will be served. Please RSVP here.

Rabbi Chaim will be traveling this week to New York to visit the Rebbe's resting place, known as "the Ohel". Throughout our history, the holy resting places of the righteous have served as our spiritual oases. The gravesites of our patriarchs and matriarchs, as well as those of our great sages, are viewed in our tradition as places of prayer and introspection and have provided solace to us for millennia. The Rebbe would frequent the resting place of his father-in-law, the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Joseph Isaac Schneersohn, of righteous memory, where he would stand and pray for hours on behalf of the thousands of people who sent him their requests.

Today, many people visit the Rebbe's resting place—known as the Ohel—each day, and many more send in their requests for prayers and blessings.

It will be our pleasure to bring letters and blessing requests on behalf of you and your family which you may drop off at Chabad of Uptown or send to via email. While writing the letter or email, remember to include the Hebrew names of the people you are asking requests for, as well as their mother's Hebrew name. It is also customary to commit to add one more Mitzvah, as a merit to receive G-d's blessings

PARSHA THOUGHT
A group of spies is dispatched to survey the Promised Land, but upon their return, they deliver a discouraging account. The people become apprehensive, and as a consequence, Hashem decrees that they must wander in the desert for forty years. It appears to be a rather bleak turn of events.

However, what follows is significant. A series of laws is introduced, specifically pertaining to the Land of Israel. The instructions commence with the words, "Speak to the children of Israel and tell them: ‘When you will come to your homeland, which I give you...’”

Interestingly, most of the people who hear these laws will never set foot in the land. Yet, they are being granted access to the teachings concerning the land. Why? Because for the Jewish people, it is never too late. Regardless of how distant we may feel or how far we may have strayed, we remain incredibly close to the Promised Land and the arrival of Moshiach!

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

PARSHA THOUGHT
As the Cloud of Glory guided the Jewish people's path in the desert, they would respectfully disassemble and pack up the Tabernacle, ready to embark on the next leg of their journey. The entire Jewish camp followed this celestial sign, with the Levites skillfully reassembling the Tabernacle at each new destination. Whether they stayed for years or just a single day, every moment was cherished, and the Tabernacle was meticulously set up with unwavering attention to detail.

In contemplating this narrative, we discover a profound parallel to our present reality. While we eagerly await the arrival of Moshiach and the ultimate return of all Jews to our beloved Promised Land, we embrace the responsibility of establishing vibrant Jewish communities wherever we may reside. Shuls, schools, yeshivas, and other essential institutions are erected with a sense of permanence, knowing that when Moshiach comes, our efforts will be divinely transported to the Holy Land, becoming an integral part of the everlasting Temple in Jerusalem.

Just as our ancestors did not allow the uncertainty of tomorrow to compromise the excellence of today, we too must strive for greatness in all our endeavors. Let us continue to build and nurture our community with unwavering dedication, recognizing that each moment we spend in the service of our heritage is a precious contribution to the bright future we anticipate.

With heartfelt prayers and unwavering faith, may we merit the fulfillment of our dreams today!

Wishing you a joyous and fulfilling week ahead.

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie
