Thoughts, notes and happenings...

Chabad of Uptown and personal diary updates! Please comment on our posts, we would love to hear from you!

did you have power?

The surprise extreme storm two weeks ago made some noise but didn't impact us at Chabad of Uptown much, but this weeks surprise storm on Tuesday came just in time AFTER the noon lunch and learn class, but put us out of power for 48 miserable hours!

But, Torah must go on!

On Tuesday night, Rabbi Moishe Traxler taught the JLI - The Rohr Jewish Learning Institute current course “Decisions of Fate” at Chabad of Uptown by candle light amid power outage due to surprise severe storms in Houston on Tuesday May 28.

On Wednesday we moved the YJP #CYPAcademy class to CASA Bar and Grill who graciously hosted YJP Houston - Young Jewish Professionals Houston in their private meeting room.

Finally two CenterPoint Energy transformers later, we got our desired power back in time for Thursday night's "Heart of Prayer" class!

Thankfully, Chanie missed it all, as she was at a retreat in Miami for Chabad Rebbetzins working with Chabad Young Professionals International for three days of much needed R&R!

Perhaps this is all connected to this week’s Torah portion that addresses the importance of observing all of G-d’s statutes. If we keep His laws, then Hashem (G-d) promises to provide all our needs: rain, food, protection, and security. We will be safe from wild storms, wild beasts and also from enemies attacking us.

In Israel and around the world, the Jewish people need as much protection and security as possible, always, but especially now. Fortunately we can look to the Torah which tells us how we can ensure our protection and have everything we need — by following Hashem’s laws.

The only problem is, Hashem is spiritual and we are very physical creatures. So how can doing what Hashem wants have an impact on our physical lives? If Hashem is spiritual and sublime, shouldn’t the reward for following His laws also be spiritual?

The answer to that is that when Hashem created the world He didn’t differentiate between spiritual and physical. He brought both elements together, to the point that they can each influence the other. So when we do a mitzvah, it affects the spiritual side of things but also yields practical results — the rewards we receive for doing what Hashem expects of us.

I pray that through all the mitzvos that we do, Hashem will indeed protect all of us, here and in Israel. May we all be safe from harm and have everything that we need!

Good Shabbos!

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

Lag B'omer Torah on fire!

The students of Rabbi Akiva were all great Torah scholars, devoted to their mentor’s every word. In fact, they were so committed to disseminating Rabbi Akiva’s teachings that they felt that anyone who didn’t see eye-to-eye with them was not deserving of any respect or recognition. This was especially true when it came to Rabbi Akiva’s famous teaching of “‘Love your fellow as yourself’—this is the most important principle in all of Torah.” Anyone who didn’t follow their teacher’s words to the tee was shunned until they came around.

As well - intentioned this seemed, in practice it led to the exact opposite of what Rabbi Akiva’s primary teaching was meant to accomplish – respect and accept everyone, even someone who sees things very differently from you. And as a result, a plague decimated almost all of the 24,000 students who couldn’t see past their own understanding.

Every year during the period between Passover and Shavuot, we mourn their deaths, until the day of Lag BaOmer (which we celebrate this Sunday), when the plague receded and the surviving students were able to rebuild and re-engage with one another in accordance with the true meaning of Rabbi Akiva’s teachings.

Thus, Lag BaOmer today is celebrated as a day of Jewish unity, when we emphasize what brings us together – our Jewish soul. Jews around the world come together to celebrate the day with public displays of Jewish pride. There are parades, fairs, barbecues, all focused on bringing Jews together to counter all that plagues us today.

By proudly displaying our Jewish unity, we proclaim to the world that we are here to stay, that nothing will ever come between us and our fellow Jews. We are one!

Good Shabbos!

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

Lag Bomer BBQ / Celebration - Next week!

The period between the holidays of Pesach and Shavuos is known as “Sefiras HaOmer” – literally meaning “counting of the Omer.” Omer is a biblical measurement of grain, and on the second day of Pesach a special offering was brought in the Beis Hamikdash (Temple) consisting of that season’s first grain. Then, 49 days were counted – seven weeks – and on the 50th day, Shavuos was celebrated, marked with a special bread offering brought to the Beis Hamikdash.

Although today we don’t have a Beis Hamikdash and thus there are no Omer offerings, the mitzvah to count the days remains in effect and it takes on unique significance. Just as the first grain needs to undergo several stages of development before it can become edible bread, so does the Jewish soul undergo a period of development during this time.

Every day that we count is another step, and another opportunity, to develop and improve our character traits. We start with inedible grain, and we incrementally work on enhancing our overall character and behavior, until finally – on Shavuos – we become truly refined, to the point that we are ready to receive the Torah, just as our ancestors did on that first Shavuos 3,300 years ago.

As we continue to enhance and improve our character traits, we daven that we merit to perform the mitzvah of counting the Omer in its most ideal way, in the Holy Beis Hamikdash in Jerusalem, with Moshiach. May it be this year!

Good Shabbos!

Priority - Love Fellow or Hashem?

One of the most important mitzvahs in all of Judaism is introduced in this week’s Torah portion: “Love your fellow as yourself.” In fact, this mitzvah is so central to Judaism that the great Rabbi Akiva referred to it as “the greatest principle of the Torah.”

It’s easy to see how mitzvahs that guide us in our relationship with our fellow humans are dependent on the principle of mutual love. But what about the mitzvahs that are about our relationship with Hashem, such as learning Torah, keeping kosher, Shabbat, daily prayers, and so on?

The explanation is that when we put ourselves in a frame of mind that we are all equal before Hashem, that enables us to prosper in all areas of Torah and Judaism. When we recognize that, when we are able to set our differences aside and instead focus on how we are all really part of a single “body” of Jews, that helps us grow our relationship with Hashem.

That’s why Jewish unity is so central to Judaism. It’s not just that we’re there for each other, but by standing united with one another, we include Hashem in this relationship too, ensuring that the Jewish nation will continue to thrive and prosper despite those who wish us harm.

Couple that with learning Torah with your closest friends, and you have connections with our fellows, Hashem and His Torah! This week we had a great kickoff of two new classes, on Tanya and Beyond Rituals, listed  below. We hope you join us!

May we merit to experience the ultimate Jewish unity, which we will see in its most perfected form with the coming of Moshiach, may it be very soon!

Good Shabbos!

the elements of the world

The three Hebrew words “olam” (world), “shanah” (year), and “nefesh” (soul) found in this week’s Torah portion are a reference to space, time, and life – the three primary elements of the universe. Everything within the world generally falls into one of these categories.

When the high priest — the holiest living person, entered the Holy of Holies — the holiest place on earth, on Yom Kippur — the holiest day of the year, the entire universe was represented.

While this was technically only a once-a-year occurrence, the fact that we are taught about it in the Torah means that it is relevant to us every day, even to a regular person on a regular Tuesday. The message we are being given is that whatever situation we may be in, we must always find and draw out the best– the holiest –in it, for the benefit of the entire universe.

In other words, we have the ability to make every moment of our lives into a Yom Kippur of sorts, where we connect the essence of our soul with G‑d, thereby ensuring that holiness endures at all times.

Good Shabbos!
