the real q is, CAN you count?

They say that there are three kinds of people. Those who can count. And, those who can't.

After the liberation of the Jewish people from Egypt, we are reminded of the significance of counting the days leading up to the momentous occasion when they would receive the Torah and directly hear from Hashem.

Traditionally, when eagerly awaiting an event, we count down: 10 days left, 9 days, 8, and so on. However, in anticipation of their arrival at Mount Sinai to receive the Torah, the Jewish people counted up, starting with one day and progressing until the grand revelation on the 50th day.

This counting was not merely a matter of marking off days on a calendar; it held a deeper purpose. Each day served as a stepping stone—a chance for self-improvement and spiritual refinement. After enduring the mindset of slavery for an extended period, they required these days to cleanse themselves spiritually before encountering G‑d in the most significant event in Jewish history.

Consequently, when the Jewish people finally reached Mount Sinai, they were prepared. They were ready to listen to G‑d's voice, prepared to dedicate themselves to a life guided by the Torah, and willing to repeat this process every year.

This year, our anticipation is further heightened as it is also a year of Hakhel, a special time for gathering and unity within our community. As we conclude the counting of the days leading up to Shavuot, we find ourselves not only ready to receive the Torah, but also eagerly embracing the spirit of Hakhel, coming together as one united body.

We invite you to join us at Chabad of Uptown on Friday morning (complete schedule below), where we will read the Ten Commandments from the Torah scroll, symbolizing our renewed commitment to the eternal teachings of our tradition. Let us celebrate this unique convergence of Shavuot and Hakhel, as we reaffirm our bonds with one another and with Hashem.

And, of course, there will be delightful dairy treats for the entire family to enjoy, fostering a sense of togetherness and joy during this festive occasion.

May this year's celebration of Shavuos, combined with the spirit of Hakhel, bring us even closer as a community and deepen our connection to the timeless wisdom of the Torah.

Good Yom Tov and Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

P.S. Don't forget to make an eruv tavshilin today!

CHABAD.ORG/NEWS:

All Night From Midnight Learning on Shavuot a Global Destination

Emilio Van Dam is eagerly anticipating the stroke of midnight on the first night of Shavuot as he prepares to participate for the first time in the all-night Torah learning program at Chabad-Lubavitch of Uptown Houston. “We’ve been counting the days since Passover for this,” says Van Dam. “The significance of receiving the Torah on Shavuot morning is deeply meaningful to me, and I want to be fully prepared.”

In recent years, “Tikkun Leil Shavuot,” which has come to refer to the practice of learning Torah all night until daybreak of Shavuot, has been steadily gaining in popularity worldwide, particularly among young adults who are drawn to Chabad programs and events throughout the year. Jewish communities around the world have embraced the tradition, organizing well-caffeinated schedules of Torah lectures and group studying, leading to increasing attendance each year.

Meanwhile, Rabbi Chaim Lazaroff, who co-directs Chabad of Uptown with his wife, Chani, is busy finalizing the night learning schedule and assisting speakers in their preparations. “We do a TED-style event,” Lazaroff tells Chabad.org. “Community members share a 15-minute talk on a Torah subject that they are passionate about.”

The TED Talk style has become a favorite, and dozens of Chabad Houses around the world will be hosting similar events. Lazaroff attributes its popularity to the spirit of community it fosters. “People appreciate the opportunity to share and learn from one another. Teaching a subject requires a greater understanding. Plus, we give people a whole schmorg of ideas to choose from and to learn from each other really builds community.”  more…

do you count?

What is the inherent worth and significance of every individual? This portion of Bamidbar begins with a comprehensive census of the Jewish people, a meticulous count of each tribe and a collective tally of all Jews.

Why was this census conducted? It serves as a powerful reminder that every single Jew holds a unique and indispensable place within the community. The Torah emphasizes that without the inclusion of each and every individual, the entirety of the Jewish people would be incomplete.

In a beautiful display of unity, Moshe enlisted the leaders of the tribes to assist in overseeing the census. Their involvement extended beyond counting their own tribes; all twelve leaders actively participated in counting the other eleven tribes as well.

This collective effort highlights the interdependence and interconnectedness of the Jewish people. When the value and significance of one individual are acknowledged and celebrated, it positively impacts the entire community. By assisting in the census of other tribes, the leaders demonstrated that their own worth was intertwined with the value of every other member.

Let us internalize this timeless wisdom and apply it to our lives today. Just as the tribal leaders recognized the mutual influence each Jew has on one another, we too must strive to uplift and support every individual in our community. By embracing the inherent value of each person, we create an environment where everyone can thrive and contribute their unique gifts.

As we journey through life together, let us cherish and respect the diversity of our community. May we continue to stand united, supporting one another until the day when we are fully reunited as one people with the arrival of Moshiach, speedily in our times!

Wishing you a week filled with unity, appreciation, and meaningful connections.

Good Shabbos!

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

Good Shabbos & Good Yom Tov!

explosive Judaism 🌋🔥 pics and vids!

Let's reflect on the ancient practice of the Jubilee, a remarkable occurrence that took place every 50 years in ancient Israel. This special event, which was observed when all Jews lived in Israel and the Sanhedrin governed in Jerusalem, held great significance.

During the Jubilee, any land that had been sold in the previous half century would return to its original owner. Essentially, there were no permanent sales of land in Israel; rather, it was like a long-term lease. This remarkable system served as a powerful reminder that ultimately, everything belongs to G‑d. He alone determines the true ownership of all things.

While we no longer practice the Jubilee in our present time, its underlying message remains relevant. It is vital for us to regularly remind ourselves that everything in this world ultimately belongs to G‑d. He has entrusted us with the responsibility of caring for His creation. In this divine trust, we must play our part in nurturing and safeguarding G‑d's world.

May we fulfill our duty as caretakers of His creation and strive to make this world a better place.

Wishing you a peaceful and restful Shabbat!

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

Good Shabbos!

its not too late

Today is Pesach Sheini, the second Passover, marked exactly one month from the first day of Pesach.

When the Jews were in the desert and were about to observe Pesach for the first time as a free nation, some people realized that would be precluded. Only ritually pure people were allowed to partake of the Paschal offering, and they were ritually impure due to having come into contact with a dead body.

They complained to Moses and Moses conferred with G‑d, returning with a solution: Anyone unable to participate in the Pesach offering, either due to being impure or being far from the Temple, would be given a second chance one month later.

Although today, in the absence of the Temple, there is no Pesach offering, the date is still marked as “the day of second chances.” It’s a reminder that if ever find ourselves in a situation beyond our control where we miss out on a mitzvah, if we want it badly enough, G‑d might just give us that opportunity. But you have to demand it, tell G‑d that you don’t want to be left out and separate from the community.

We mark the day by eating a little matzah, and demanding of G‑d that he send Moshiach so we can rebuild the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and once again offer the Pesach sacrifice. May it happen soon!

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

With record interest inspiring curiosity, dread, and mockery, this course probes the Talmud, Jewish philosophy, and kabbalah to provide Jewish perspectives and guidance for those curious about these perennial questions.  Learn more here

Many of us are in Guatemala for an amazing weekend enjoying a memorable experience, including so far visiting Hobbitenango Guatemala and camping overnight while observing the beauty of the active Fuego volcano from Mount Acatenango. We look forward to celebrating a meaningful Shabbat together to not only explore a new country but to also connect with like-minded individuals from across the USA and Canada forming lasting relationships.

The Chabad house is also a popular destination for Israeli backpackers seeking a sense of community and connection while traveling. These young travelers can often be found socializing with other Jews, engaging in Jewish learning and practice, and participating in activities like Shabbat dinners and holiday celebrations. For many Israeli backpackers, the Chabad house provides a unique opportunity to explore their heritage and connect with the broader Jewish community while on the road, forming relationships with fellow travelers from around the world who share a similar interest in Jewish identity and practice.
