Become Mental Health First Aid certified!

We had a very relaxing Pesach break with all the kids home and enjoying quality family time. We hope that you had a meaningful Pesach as well.

This week's Torah portion describes the service of High Priest in the Temple on the holiest day of the year, Yom Kippur. His offerings, his purification in the ritual bath, and his prayers.

This narrative is immediately followed by a seemingly unrelated section, describing the laws of forbidden marriages and relationships.

Since nothing in Torah is by chance, there is certainly some connection between the two portions. It serves as a reminder that while being holy and spiritual is important, it cannot be without a healthy dose of morality. And it also reminds us that just like the laws dictating the holiest day of the year are from G-d, the rules about ethics and morality are equally Divine.

May we all succeed is finding purpose in our lives in obviously G-dly acts of spirituality and holiness and just as importantly in the daily mundane life that we all live in!

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Chaim and Chanie

Moshiach's Days are here

A wonderful Pesach and Seders had with so many of you! We look forward to seeing everyone for Pesach last days, with highlights of Yizkor and Moshiach Seudah on Saturday. Complete schedule below.

TODAY: Eruv Tavshilin - When Shabbos occurs immediately following a festival -- as it does this year -- an "eruv tavshilin" (i.e., food for at least one "meal" that is set aside in advance for Shabbos) must be prepared prior to the festival, so that it should be permitted to prepare food for Shabbat during the festival. For more on Eruv Tavshilin and how it is made click here

TONIGHT: Night of Learning - It is customary to remain awake tonight on the eve of the Seventh of Passover and spend the entire night in Torah study and joyous celebration of the great miracle of the splitting of the sea.

FRIDAY MORNING: Reading of the Song at the Sea -  On the Seventh Day of Pesach we read how on this day the sea split for the Children of Israel and drowned the pursuing Egyptians, and the "Song at the Sea" sung by the people upon their deliverance (Exodus 13:17-15:26; full summary with commentary here).

SATURDAY MORNING: Yizkor - The remembrance prayer for departed parents, is recited today after the morning reading of the Torah. Links: The Yizkor PrayerHonor Due to Parents, On Breavement and Mourning

SATURDAY AFTERNOON / EVENING: Moshiach's Meal The last day of Pesach ("Acharon Shel Pesach") is particularly associated with Moshiach and the future redemption. The Haftarah for this day is from Isaiah 11, which describes the promised future era of universal peace and divine perfection. Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov instituted the custom of partaking of a "Moshiach's meal" on the afternoon of the last day of Pesach; in addition to the matzah eaten at "Moshiach's meal", the Rebbes of Chabad added the custom of drinking four cups of wine, as in the seder held on Pesach's first days.Links: Haftarah for 8th of Passover, The Third SederMoshiach: an Anthology.

50 & 120 years of impact - RSVP seders

This Tuesday, 11 Nissan, is the Rebbe's 120th birthday, marked with significance worldwide as Education and Sharing Day and celebrated by Chassidim worldwide as a day of reflection of the lessons we can cull from the Rebbe's life to live in the ways he demonstrated and taught us. Locally, Chabad of Texas was established as a birthday gift 50 years ago as one of 71 new institutions opened after his 70th birthday in 1972.

This week, Chaya and Rabbi Chaim and Seth Weisberg, were in Washington DC attending the Living Legacy Conference chaired by Rabbi Levi Shemtov of American Friends of Lubavitch. The conference marks 120 years since the Rebbe’s birth, as well as Education and Sharing Day U.S.A. Programs reflect upon the past decades and the lifetime of the Rebbe, as the Jewish people seek guidance and inspiration from his leadership for the unprecedented challenges of our time.

A dazzling array of members of both Houses and government officials from both sides of the aisle were in attendance on Capitol Hill in the caucus room of Russel State Office Building. Each delivering their own remarks, guests included Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY); Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Roy Blunt (R-MO), Rick Scott (R-FL), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Ted Cruz (R-TX); House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Michelle Steel (R-CA), Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN), Claudia Tenney (R-NY), Dusty Johnson (R-SD), Madison Cawthorn (R-NC), Lee Zeldin (R-NY) and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL). Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY) attended, but left before he was able to speak at the event. Also attending the program were diplomats from Morocco, Germany, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Qatar and other countries.

The program included academic presentations at the Library of Congress by Supreme Court of Western Australia Justice Rabbi Marcus Solomon and Dr. Tali Loewenthal of the University College London (UCL).

Over lunch at the St. Regis guests heard from Rabbi Jonathan Markovich, Chief Rabbi of Kyiv,  David Malpass, president of the World Bank Group; Anne Neuberger, an observant Jewish woman who serves as the deputy national security advisor for Cyber and Emerging Technology in the Biden Administration; Stuart Eizenstat, former U.S. ambassador to the European Union and deputy secretary of the Treasury and is currently the Chairman for United States Holocaust Memorial Council.

The day concluded with a dinner including talks from William C. Daroff. CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations; Natan Sharansky, Israeli human rights activist and chair of Babyn Yar Memorial Center; and former Sen. Joe Lieberman; among others and ended with a concert with Avraham Fried.

Some memorable quotes:

Cory Booker described his inspiration is culls from the Rebbe as one my his heros and how he shares that with others, "I am the Rebbe's unofficial shliach to the Goyim!"

Joe Lieberman in describing the feeling he personally had when catching the Rebbe's eye to say Lchaim at the Rebbe's farbrengen said, "When we do a Mitzva now, that’s how we catch the Rebbe’s eye”

Lee Zeldin called upon all politicians to go to the Ohel!
