Thoughts, notes and happenings...

Chabad of Uptown and personal diary updates! Please comment on our posts, we would love to hear from you!

We are sorry!

We are sorry! Last week we left off the link to the pics from the community Purim party "in the Shtetl". We know how badly y'all want to see them, so here it is! (Of course, if it you missed it, you may also want to see the epic YJP Purim at the Rodeo pics as well!)

This week we take out two Torahs, as we read what is (according to many) a Biblically mandated Torah reading of Parah, in addition to weekly Torah reading, this week Shemini. Parah details the laws of the "Red Heifer" and the process by which a person rendered ritually impure by contact with a dead body was purified. When the Holy Temple stood in Jerusalem, every Jew had to be in a state of ritual purity in time for the bringing of the Passover offering in the Temple. Today, though we're unable to fulfill the Temple-related rituals in practice, we fulfill them spiritually by studying their laws in the Torah. Thus, we study and read the section of Parah in preparation for the upcoming festival of Passover. Links: The Parah reading with commentaryThe Calf's Mother

Purim this week @ the Rodeo and the Shtetl

Don't miss Purim with YJP Houston at the Rodeo and Chabad of Uptown in the Shtetl! Complete Purim schedule below!

Shabbat is the Jewish day of rest. Religious observance of Shabbat includes a prohibition against operating electricity - which means not even touching phones and other electronic devices.

But this past Shabbat was different. Because Jewish law puts saving lives over everything.

Ukrainian-speaking Chabad emissaries and volunteers spent the whole day on the phone, trying to convince Ukrainian Jews to leave before it’s too late.

The volunteers went through every phone number they had, often patiently explaining to the elderly Jews the significant danger ahead, as missiles are now falling on civilian homes, and escape routes are closing in.

Then the callers provided detailed instructions on how to securely reach the busses and carpools arranged by Chabad that will bring them to safety outside of the battered Ukraine.

One such emissary was Rabbi Silberstein from Chernigov. His young daughter was distraught and confused.

“Tatty (daddy), it doesn’t feel like Shabbat when you’re on the phone the whole time.”

“You’re right,” he answered her. “But thank God we got to coordinate 13 cars to leave Chernigov over Shabbat! That’s 13 cars with 5 people in each one - we got to save 65 worlds! How fortunate we are!

Parshat Zachor This being the Shabbat before Purim, on which we celebrate the foiling of Haman the Amalekite's plot to destroy the Jewish people, the weekly Parshah is supplemented with the Zachor reading (Deuteronomy 25:17-19) in which we are commanded to remember the evil of Amalek and to eradicate it from the face of the earth. "Parshat Zachor" is the second of four special readings added during or immediately before the month of Adar (the other three being "Shekalim", "Parah" and "Hachodesh") Links: The Zachor Reading with commentary, More on Who Was Amalek?

Have a good Shabbos!

candles are needed for ukraine!

As we speak, there are thousands of people escaping Ukraine to get to safer lands.

This Shabbos, they will keep Shabbos by traveling on Shabbos to save their own and their community's lives.

Many of them include women and girls and the Shluchos, leading the Chabad centers in Ukraine. These brave women have at great personal risk stuck it out until the very last seconds, to be with their communities and help as many people as possible escape or possibly find safer shelter. The urgency of their travels will not allow many of them the chance to stop to light Shabbat candles. They have made a plea begging all Jewish women and girls all over the world to light Shabbos candles today on their behalf. As you do so, have them in mind and pray for their families, all the refugees on the road, the Jewish communities, and the entire people of Ukraine.

TORAH: This morning; Zhitomer Ukraine’s Chabad Rabbi, Shloime Wilhelm, after arranging tens of buses to help people escape, finally joined the last bus, and reached Romania, whilst carrying one of the community’s Sefer Torahs.

TRAVELERS: More than 140 students and staff arrived in Romania from a children's home in Zhitomir.

MOTHER & BABY: Chani and her family, the youngest of which Miri who is only 2 weeks old, are Shluchim of Chabad in Ukraine, in Charkov (along with 200 families of Shluchim all around Ukraine - There are 350,000 Jews in Ukraine). Baruch Hashem, Chani and her family (along with other families) managed to leave Charkov. They arrived to Dnieper (where the situation is -relatively- safer) and are now in the middle of their trip towards the Ukrainian border. Even though Chani keeps the Mitzvot and observes Shabbat carefully, the Mitzvah THIS Shabbat for her is to travel in order to save their lives.

SOLDIERS: Extra help was brought in to protect those taking shelter in the shul of Chabad Lubavitch in Kyiv lead by Rabbi & Mrs. Markovitch.

LIGHTING CANDLES: Cherry Markovich of Chabad Young Professionals in Kyiv, lights Shabbat candles last week. She has safely arrived, after a harrowing journey, to France. https://youtu.be/Ts8HI-zsn6I
