Chabad of Uptown and personal diary updates! Please comment on our posts, we would love to hear from you!

Be happy & three Torahs!

This week’s Torah portion contains the verse: “They shall make Me a sanctuary, so that I may dwell in their midst.” Notice, it doesn’t say, “in its midst,” but rather, “in their midst.” Hashem’s command to build a sanctuary wasn’t just about a physical structure in the desert. It was, and remains, a directive for each of us to create spaces where Hashem's presence can dwell—both within ourselves and throughout the world.

This commandment has three dimensions. First, the physical Mishkan (Tabernacle) that our ancestors constructed, which served as a dwelling for Hashem’s revealed presence. Second, the personal sanctuary each of us is called to build—transforming our lives into vessels for holiness by letting our Divine soul shine through. And third, the ultimate mission of transforming the entire world into Hashem’s home, a place where His presence is fully revealed.

Remarkably, this task is not about creating something new, but revealing what already exists. Every person, every object, and every moment is infused with Divine energy. Our job is to strip away the distractions and obstructions, allowing the true essence to emerge.

May we each take steps this week to reveal the sanctuary within ourselves and to illuminate the world around us. And may our collective efforts bring about the ultimate sanctuary—the coming of Moshiach, when Hashem’s presence will fill the entire world.

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

COHEN CORNER
"It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen."

Though the Mishkan no longer exists, we can still apply its lessons by creating sanctified spaces in our lives. The Mishkan was built according to Hashem’s precise specifications, showing that attention to detail matters. We might think we can be spiritual in our own way, but real love for Hashem is expressed through the actions He desires, not just our feelings. Dedicating time to learn Torah and being mindful of our speech and actions allows Hashem’s presence to dwell in our homes. By aligning with His will, we create a space for the divine, just like the Mishkan did.

Have a terrific Shabbos!
Rabbi Yosef, Chanale & Mushka Cohen

JEWISH CUSTOMS

  • "When Adar enters," the Talmud declares, "we increase in joy." For this is "the month that was transformed for them from sorrow to joy, from mourning to festivity" (Esther 9:22) by the great miracle and victory of Purim. Today and tomorrow is Rosh Chodsh Adar, kicking off this special month of joy. Our sages advise that the month of Adar is an auspicious time for the Jewish people, so that if a Jew is faced with a challenging event (i.e., a court case, a medical procedure, etc.) he should endeavor to schedule it during Adar. Links: 4 Reasons to be Happy; more on joy.
  • Parshat Shekalim - When the Holy Temple stood in Jerusalem, each Jew contributed an annual half-shekel to the Temple. The 1st of Adar marked the beginning of the collection of the shekalim. In commemoration, the Torah reading of the Shabbos that falls on or before Adar 1 is supplemented with the verses (Exodus 30:11-16) that relate G-d's commandment to Moses regarding the first giving of the half-shekel. "Parshat Shekalim" is the first of four special readings added during or immediately before the month of Adar (the other three being "Zachor", "Parah" and "Hachodesh") Links: The Shekalim Reading with commentaryPartnerTzedakah: Charity
  • Three Sefer Torahs - This Shabbos is unique in that three Torah scrolls are taken from the ark and read from in the public Torah reading: one scroll for the weekly Parshah, a second scroll for the Rosh Chodesh reading, and a third scroll for the Shekalim reading! Don't miss it!

Surviving to Thriving

Chanie & Chanale are in NY for the annual conference of Chabad Rebbetzins as yesterday was 22 Shevat. It is the yartzeit when we honor the life and legacy of Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneerson, a woman of remarkable humility, wisdom, and dedication.

The Rebbetzin was born into the illustrious Schneersohn family in 1901, she grew up surrounded by holiness and the selfless leadership of her father, the sixth Chabad Rebbe. From her youth, the Rebbetzin demonstrated profound courage and faith, standing by her father during times of great peril and contributing to his work with quiet strength. Later, as the wife of the Rebbe, she embodied the ideal of the Psalmist: “The entire honor of a king’s daughter is within.”

The Rebbetzin’s greatness was expressed in her private acts of kindness, her unwavering support for the Rebbe’s mission, and her deep care for all who sought her guidance. She declined public recognition, yet her wisdom and sincerity left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Although she had no children of her own, the Rebbetzin saw the global Chabad family as her children, and her legacy lives on through the thousands of women and girls who proudly bear her name.

As we mark her yahrzeit on the 22nd of Shevat, let us draw inspiration from the Rebbtzin's life, striving to embody her values of humility, faith, and devotion in our own lives.

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

True strength lies not in just surviving challenges, but in thriving despite them. Join us for a transformative community Shabbaton on March 21-22, featuring Rabbi Yisrael and Vivi Deren. Their inspiring talks will equip you with practical tools for resilience, including "My Jewish Toolbox" on Friday night and "The Strength of the Smile" on Shabbos day. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our generous sponsors, Daniel Casslasy, in memory of Yona David ben Yaffa, a"h, and the Benjaminov family, in memory of Menachem Tzvi ben Yaffa, a"h, whose support made this unforgettable weekend possible.

COHEN CORNER
“Don’t let your habits become handcuffs.”

This week’s Torah portion includes laws about property damage caused by an ox. If an ox gored and caused damage, the owner would pay 50% for the first two incidents, then the full cost after the third, as they were responsible for guarding the animal. If the ox changed owners and environments, the count reset.

The animalistic soul within us can change by shifting our environment. Rather than relying on willpower alone, surrounding ourselves with positive influences helps break old patterns and form new, healthier habits.

Have a wonderful Shabbos!

Rabbi Yosef and Chanale Cohen

no is yes! shared purpose... - PICS

This week’s Torah portion describes the events at Mount Sinai, where Hashem gave the Jewish people the Ten Commandments, and within it the entirety of the Torah.

The Talmud describes two perspectives on how the Jewish people responded to Hashem at Mount Sinai. One view suggests they said “yes” to positive commandments—embracing the “do’s”—and “no” to prohibitions—the “dont's.” Another view holds that their response to all commandments, positive and negative, was a wholehearted “yes!” This teaches us that Judaism welcomes both approaches.

For those beginning their spiritual journey, a “yes” mindset is crucial. Embracing mitzvot with enthusiasm, even when they feel unfamiliar or challenging, helps lay the foundation for a life rooted in Torah and mitzvot.

For those more seasoned in observance, the “no” is equally meaningful. It represents the discipline to avoid the negative while appreciating the boundaries that sustain a Torah life. At the same time, even within the comfort of routine, we must remain ready to say “yes” to growth, to stretch beyond what feels easy when circumstances call for it.

Whether you find yourself naturally saying “yes” or “no,” Judaism embraces your unique personality and offers countless opportunities for spiritual growth. Hashem meets us where we are and guides us to where we’re meant to be.

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

COHEN CORNER
"
Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, working together is success."

Throughout their desert journey, the Jewish people, with their diverse intellects and emotions, often clashed. Yet at Har Sinai, they united in shared purpose, setting aside differences. We too can emulate this unity, valuing connection over division by filling our days with a higher purpose.

It was so amazing to see everyone's creativity last night at the Tu Bshvat watermelon carving event! We look forward to sharing more enjoyable experiences together with this beautiful community!

Have a splendid Shabbos!

Rabbi Yosef and Chanale Cohen

when dark is light

This Shabbos, the 10th of Shevat, is the anniversary of the Rebbe officially accepting the mantle of leadership of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, on the first anniversary of his predecessor’s passing.

There will be a special Lunch interactive farbrengen lead by the Cohens, we hope you will join us.

Before the Sixth Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson, of righteous memory, passed away, he published a 20-chapter discourse titled “Basi Legani” on various esoteric Chassidic concepts, all with practical, down-to-earth applications. It served as a last will and testament of sorts, guiding his followers in the days and years after his passing.

Every year, on the yahrzeit, the Rebbe would deliver a discourse of his own, each year elaborating on another chapter of the original discourse.

The 15th chapter of the discourse focuses on how the only way we can experience G-dliness in our own finite existence is by G-d condensing His Essence in a way that allows us to relate to Him. This doesn’t mean that we don’t see actual G-dliness; rather, the condensing, or “tzimtzum” as it’s referred to, is also part of G-dliness. So whatever seemingly watered down version we are able to access, at the end of the day we can access it because Hashem wants us to.

So instead of viewing this as a deficiency, it is to be seen as Hashem’s greatest gift to us. He allows for His most sublime Essence, which is infinitely beyond anything we can imagine and relate to, to become part of our lives. This isn’t a secondary exposure to G-dliness, it is the actual ray of G-d’s Light right there, even when all we think we see is darkness.

This was the Rebbe’s mission from his first day as leader of Chabad—to remind us that everything we see around us is G-dliness, and therefore every interaction we have with a fellow Jew must be with the goal of increasing the Divine revelation wherever we are.

This will be fulfilled in its complete form with the ultimate redemption and the coming of Moshiach, may it happen in our times!

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

COHEN CORNER
Don't ask Hashem to guide your footsteps unless you're willing to move your feet."

When the Jewish nation stood at the Red Sea with the Egyptian army in hot pursuit, they were paralyzed and unsure, divided in their next step. Only when Nachshon ben Aminadav acted, stepping into the sea, Hashem removed the obstacle to Mount Sinai. Similarly, in our lives, we often face seemingly impossible challenges. We must take the first step, and then we will see Divine assistance guide our path forward.

Have a wonderful Shabbos!

Rabbi Yosef, Chanale and Mushka Cohen
