escaping egypt and belgium - PHOTOS

The Hebrew name for Egypt is “Mitzrayim,” which shares the same letters as the word “meitzarim,” meaning “borders” or “limitations.”

When the Jewish people were freed from Egypt, in addition to leaving their physical bondage, they also attained spiritual freedom, breaking free from limitations that had hindered their ability to grow spiritually.

Being able to put the past behind you and move forward is the most liberating feeling in the world, and when our ancestors did it after more than two centuries of exile, they empowered us—in all future generations—to do the same.

Our limitations can sometimes be self-imposed, where we convince ourselves that we are unable to perform as Jews are expected to.

But like our ancestors in Egypt, freedom is possible.

The Mishna teaches that a person can never be truly free unless he or she is immersed in Torah study. The amount doesn’t matter; the fact that you are committed to studying Torah leads to a mindset of liberty.

So set aside a few minutes (or more) each day, and begin your path to true freedom.

Freedom can be a work in progress, every day allowing us to reach a new level, until we reach the final destination–the coming of Moshiach, may it be speedily in our times!

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

Around Chabad of Uptown & YJP Houston:

The NYC CYP Encounter as reported in the JHV: Young adult Jews represent Houston at Int’l Leadership Convention - Shabbat in Brooklyn fires up emerging Jewish leaders: A group of 23 young Jewish professionals represented Houston in Brooklyn, N.Y., where they participated in a leadership convention Jan. 13-16. The convention attracted upwards of 500 other young adults from 100 communities. Dubbed “Chabad Young Professionals – Encounter,” the event plugged the group into a network of emerging leaders from Jewish communities worldwide. At home in Houston, these enterprising professionals have taken active roles in the local Jewish community. In Brooklyn, they shared lessons they’d learned and took the opportunity to learn from peers. More...Photo Gallery Here

Bob Ullman escape from Belgium, 1940 - This past Wednesday, YJP Houston recently hosted an evening with Holocaust Survivor Bob Ullman. Bob shared the story of his family's narrow escape from Belgium in 1940, and what being a Jew means to him today. Hosted by YJP Houston, the event of over 80 people of all ages, consisted mainly of young professionals. Bob recalled his vivid memory of the moment his father pulled him inside from the ship's deck. Sailors were dropping anti-submarine depth charges, for fears of the Nazi Navy lurking beneath their surface. Most of the details he told of his escape were told to him and recorded by his older sisters. Stressing that there will probably be no more Holocaust survivors alive in 10 to 15 years from today, he passionately encouraged the young generation to step up and make their voices heard. As the future of the Jewish people, he is relying on them for their efforts in holocaust awareness and Jewish engagement. Every Wednesday evening, YJP Houston powered by Chabad of Uptown, hosts a dinner, class and social on contemporary themes. For the four Wednesdays of February, a four-part course will be offered on Torah's teachings for the Jewish perspective on dating. Those that successfully complete the course, will receive a $200 voucher to any future CYP Encounter trip, including upcoming trips to Poland and Guatemala. Sign up for the course at www.yjphouston.org/datingPhoto Gallery of the event here

Kicking up the passion - PHOTOS

The first two plagues wrought upon the Egyptians contain conflicting messages:

The first, when all the water in Egypt turned into blood, represents the need to transform coldness into passion and excitement. The second plague, frogs, sent the opposite message, since the frogs, which are cold-blooded creatures, went so far as to sacrifice themselves by jumping into the Egyptians’ ovens, implying a cooling down of passion and excitement.

The plagues were not just punishments for the Egyptian tormentors, but also messages for us.

The different messages represented by these two plagues depend on the target. When focusing on a lack of passion in Judaism, the change needs to come in the form of blood–warmth and enthusiasm. But when there is passion for the wrong things–for worldly matters rather than for holiness–then the focus should be on lowering the temperature.

By striking this balance we bring absolute perfection to the world, leading to the ultimate perfection we hope and pray for every day—the coming of Moshiach!

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

Last weekend we lead the Houston delegation of 23 young professionals to NYC, joining hundreds from around North America for the fourth annual Encounter Shabbaton of the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. Guided tours of the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn included a visit to a hand made shmurah Matzah bakery, mikvah, kosher wine tasting, wig maker, Sofer (ritual scribe), 770 World Headquarters and Aguch Library. Shabbat concluded with a musical Havdalah service and acoustic opener by top 10 smash hit song writer Alex Clare and a concert with the popular Zusha Band at Sony Hall. Houston, and the many groups from Texas, definitely made their mark! Good Shabbos!

get out!

When the Jewish people were enslaved in Egypt, they were very close to becoming completely assimilated into Egyptian culture. For 200 years they learned from the Egyptians and even attempted to become more like them. In fact, in some ways they were so similar to the Egyptians that some angels attempted to convince G‑d to just leave them there.

But three things kept them separate from their Egyptian hosts, and are what ultimately earned them redemption: they maintained their Jewish names, their Jewish way of dress, and their Jewish language.

All three of these are external, only relevant to people outside of ourselves, yet when it came to being deserving of redemption, that’s what mattered. By being proud of their heritage and wearing it on their sleeves every day, the Jewish people demonstrated that, as assimilated as they may have been, they would always be Jewish.

No matter what happens to the Jewish people throughout history, our Jewish pride must always remain at the forefront of everything we do. And that will lead to the ultimate redemption and the coming of Moshiach!

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

Good Shabbos!

Jewish among the nations

This week we complete the final portion of the Book of Bereishis with the chanting of "Chazak"! It describes the final years of Jacob's life. After spending the majority of his life moving from place to place, his final 17 years were the most peaceful and calm.

Interestingly, he did not spend those best years of his life in the Holy Land, but in Egypt, considered the most spiritually depraved land at the time. Yet of all places, that's where Jacob found serenity.

One reason those were his best years is because his son Joseph saw to his every need and ensured that his entire family was taken care of. But it's really more than that. When Jacob saw how his son, who despite being entrenched in Egyptian society, still maintained his commitment to G‑d and to the faith of his ancestors, he knew the nascent Jewish nation would be able to survive anything.

When we are strong enough to remain Jewish through all the ups and downs we experience, our ancestors can rest assured that their investment in our future is paying off, and will continue to propel us through to the coming of Moshiach.

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie
