The Hebrew Month of Nisan
Nisan 2027 begins in the evening preceding April 8
Nisan (or Nissan), the first month on Jewish calendar (according to the Torah), coincides with March-April on the civil calendar. The Torah calls it chodesh ha-aviv—the month of spring, as it marks the beginning of the spring months.
On the first day of Nisan in the year 2448 from creation (1313 BCE), two weeks before the Exodus, G‑d showed Moses the crescent new moon, instructing him regarding the setting of the Jewish calendar and the mitzvah of sanctifying the new month. “This month shall be for you the head of months, the first of the months of the year” (Exodus 12:2). This ushered in the first Jewish month and commenced the lunar calendar that Jews have been following ever since. It was the first mitzvah (“commandment”) given to the newly born nation of Israel, even before the exodus from Egypt.

Why do we celebrate in Elul and Tishrei again as new year?
Rosh Hashanah (the first day of the seventh month) is the head of the year, while Nissan (the month in which Passover falls, is the first of the months. See
Our Other Head for more info.
but where is mention that the new 1 month (Nissan) is the 7th month of the previous calendar?
We know this from the fact that it is always the beginning of spring.
Please let me know the word nissan which language is it from?
Nisan is the Babylonian name for the first month of the Jewish calendar, used during and after the Babylonian exile (see Esther 3:7 and Nehemiah 2:1). Aviv is the original Hebrew name for the same period, used prior to the exile (see Exodus 13:4, Deuteronomy 16:1, Ezekiel 3:15)
Thank you Chabad of Raleigh, Falls of the Neuse Road, for CREATING such a Beautiful Seder after Shabbat Ha-Gadol. As a single woman, age 74, I have not prepared a Seder, yet I remember my Grandmother (Hava Shalom) and Mother (Havah Shalom) working for days to host our large family and friends. I'm sure the Rabbi Wilchensky and the Rebbetzin were exhausted, especially because of the very late night hour. The tables were set so elegantly set and the food was great. I hope to attend again. Sincerely, Deborah
Very helpful in reading my Bible as reference.
Thank You
Thank you for making this website. When was this calendar created? I've been told that this calendar existed since the beginning of creation. However, when reading the Torah, it appears that the calendar first began with Moses at the time of the exodus from Egypt - Exodus 12:2.
If you read Genesis, you’ll notice that every one of the the 6 days God work it ended every time: “and it was the evening and a day the first day” , and it happens that this the way how the days and Lunar calendar are meassure, from evening to evening.
I have come to know about the holidays but didn't understand how to follow-up
Now blessed that I'm starting to learn. Thank God
So Nisan is the first year of the Jewish Calender? Also, is Hebrew the same thing as Jewish? What are all the months of the Jewish calender ?
Nissan is the first of the months, while Tishrei is the first of the year. See this link for a list of all the months on the Jewish calendar.
תישרי,חשוון,כיסלו,טבת,שבת אדר,ניסן,אייר,סיוון,תמוז,אב,אלול
Steps on preparation to celebrate Nisan the (new year )?
The ordinary preparations for Rosh CHodesh on the Shbbbos beforehand are in place. See here:
During the first thirteen days of Nissan, we recite the Parshat Hansi'im: See the following link for the text.
Usually, at this time, people are getting ready for Pesach (Passover)

If the Torah tells us to count from Nisan why do we count from Tishrei?
The Torah tells us to count months from Nissan, which we do. Years, on the other hand, are counted from Tishrei.
What is your source for saying that we count in Tishrei?
It seems that the "religious" calendar year starts in Nisan ("it shall be the first month" Ex 12:2), and the "governmental" year was from Tishrei to Tishrei.
Would love to know the answer for that question. Why is Rosh Hashana not falling in Nissan?
I do not see any reason given why Tishrei is considered the 1st month of the year when the Torah states that Nissan is the 1st month of the year.
What source changed it to Tishrei?
It is an argument when was the world created. We rule that Adam Harishon was created in Tishri so Rosh Hashanah is in Tisri as we say Hayom Haras Olam. Bereishis can be rewritten as bealef tishri. Tosfos says that the machshava, the original intention was Nissan but the action of creation was in Tishri.
Is this years Nisan a special one?
In Exodus, Aviv is mentioned as the first month. Why is Nisan mentioned as the first month? Isn’t The word Nisan carried over from Babylonian captivity? Thanks.
Aviv or Abib is an alternate term for Nisan. Tishri is also called Ethanim.
I question that also
Why does the 7-year cycle and Shemita year begin in the 7th month rather than the 1st month?
Shalom aleichem Nona! Shemita and all special shabbats are based off the "spiritual/scriptural/sacred" year which begins with Aviv as its' first month. Tishri is the first month of the "civil" year, in which case Aviv would be the seventh month in the civil year.
Does anyone celebrate Nisan as the first month of the Hebrew calendar as it says we should do in Vayikra? Why then is Rosh Hashanah in a different month?
Rosh Hashanah (the first day of the seventh month) is the head of the year, while Nissan (the month in which Passover falls, is the first of the months. See Our Other Head for why this is so.
Will it says rosh Hashanah is the feast of trumpets and it says to celebrate that in the 7th month on the 1st day so I think it's different but I'm studying it try to understand what the difference is myself
I’d like to know if Abraham Isaac and Jacob died on Rosh Chodesh nissan ?
Does the year on the Religious calendar change from 5780 => 5781 on Nisan 1? Why would it not change?
The Hebrew year changes with Rosh Hashanah.
Good question! There is a religious and a civil Hebrew calendar. Nisan 1 is the first day of the religious year; Rosh Hashanah is the first day of the civil calendar.
Civil year? The beginning of Israelite freedom from human slavery started in Nissan. Hashem determined that we count our years from Nissan. I have not been informed as to the source given why Tishrei is considered the first month.
We have one calendar. There is no civil and religious division in Judaism!
Who decided the civil calendar?
I have a question which no one will answer. What are we not allowed to do the whole month of Nissan?
We do not say Tachanun (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 429:2), nor do we fast in the month of Nissan, according to Ashkenazim (Rema Orach Chaim 429:2).
Eulogize
Thanks....Chabadniks are soo nice
Nisan Birthdays Where can I find a list of birthdays of important Jewish figures born in Nisan?
We don't have a list in one place, you can look through our calendar entries at chabad.org/calendar where we list significant events daily.
Your very first paragraph says "The Torah calls it chodesh ha-aviv—the month of spring,....."
Why then do you call it Nisan in the next paragraph? Isn't that Babylonian influence and is, in fact, the first month of the Assyrian calendar. Why would we, as Yisra'el, follow them rather than YHWH?
Please see this link for a response to your question.

Nisan is also mentioned in many texts as the month of Geula (redemption) based on the 4-5 promises Hashem made to the Jews using this word.
Why isn’t it discussed in this article?
