What Would Your Dying Words Be?

If Moshiach, G-d forbid, does not come by Saturday night, we will be marking another year of mourning on Tisha B'Av. Join us for an evening of film, study and personal reflection with Megilat Eicha - Book of Lamentations followed by a moving film, "Keep Quiet". Complete schedule below.

As vice-president of Hungary’s far-right extremist party, Csanad Szegedi espoused anti-Semitic rhetoric and Holocaust denials, and founded the Hungarian Guard, a now-banned militia inspired by a pro-Nazi group complicit in the murder of thousands of Jews during WWII. But his life was soon upended when Szegedi’s maternal grandparents were revealed to be Jewish and his beloved grandmother an Auschwitz survivor who had hidden her faith, fearing further persecution. Keep Quiet depicts Szegedi’s three-year journey to embrace his newfound religion. But is his transformation genuine? Or does he simply have nowhere else to turn?

Nine Days

Today, Rosh Chodesh Av, begins "The Nine Days" of mourning for the destruction of Temple begin. There are many customs associated with these days, that can be read in our online calendar here and more elaborately here.

It is customary to hear a Siyum, a completion ceremony of Talmud, during these nine days to increase in the study of Torah, transforming these dark days to light. If you can't make one in person, we will be broadcasting a live Siyum daily on our website at www.chabaduptown.org/siyum. The first siyum will be today, Friday, at 1:45 pm Houston time. You can see the full broadcast schedule on the siyum page as well.

precious daughters of Israel

Thank you all for your birthday wishes, as another year has gone down in the books! Having you as part of our extended family means so much to us, more than we can express.

In our Parsha, Moshe instructs how to divide the family by tribe. While Jewish descent is maternal, tribal affiliation is paternal. The daughters of Tzlafchad, whose father died without sons, cared for the Land of Israel and petitioned to be granted the portion that would have belonged to their father. They were as holy as the generation of women before them. While the men 38 years prior refused to enter the land of Israel, the women loved the land and desired to go. 38 years later and the daughters of Tzlafchad still had the same affinity to a piece of the Holy Land. Hashem accepts it, and institutes it as law.

A story in Torah is to teach us lessons. Israel is not only a land to promote and be proud of, we are connected intrinsically to it. Keeping our land intact and uncompromising our borders echos the call of the daughters of Israel and now.
