Special Challah of Integration

yad mitzvah day 1,17.png
Wow! What a week!

We kicked it off right with an amazing Sunday!

After a wonderful 8:30 am Shacharis and breakfast, we hosted a beautiful 9:30 am Challah Bake, partnering volunteers from Jewish Federation's YAD Houston Mitzvah Day with the newly launched FCYA (Friendship Circle of Houston Young Adults) & Pathfinder to bake Challah for the Chabad of Uptown's Loaves of Love program for seniors. The event was sponsored by YJP Houston - Young Jewish Professionals HoustonCheck out the photos! Jewish Herald Voice is running a beautiful story on their front page...

After it was done. we hit the 12:30 pm YAD wrap up party in Midtown where all Mitzvah day groups gathered to do the social thing.

This followed, with a 1:30 pm  Pidyon Haven Mazel tov to  Matt & Ellee Lazarov(!) Breit of the pidyon haben of their son!

Torah Day School hosted a great 2-4 pm PreChanukah community event!

And, this was all while setting up the sofer that was here to check tefillin and mezuzos and we got him all set up that day too!

All in a day. One fantastic Sunday.

👏 162 messages of love

match success timer.pngWE DID IT!! Mazel tov!! We are so thankful to be part of this special community and appreciate the love and support from all of you! This is a real testament to how incredibly invested each of you are in Chabad of Uptown and we can't thank you enough for partnering in our work. Thank you everyone, ALL 162 OF YOU, comprised of and representing so many across the spectrum of our community indicates the breadth and reach of where we are! Most importantly, a major thank you to our matchers who helped make this all happen!

Today we completed a Tanya journey of six years. Truly a transformative experience, the study of Tanya from page one came to a final page of the book, with many of you who jumped on the wagon for various parts, and some valiant members making their way through every page of the astounding wisdom of the Alter Rebbe dripped down to ink on paper. We will hold a formal Siyum completion ceremony sometime in the coming months. We will start a new class on Thursdays at noon, with optional $10 lunch, of English text-based study of five of the Rebbe's monumental maamarim, Chassidic discourses.

This Sunday will be a Sunday of inclusion as YJP Houston will host the YAD mitzvah day for Challah Bake with FCYA (Friendship Circle Young Adults) for Young Adults with special needs and Pathfinder. What a beautiful mitzvah! If you know a young adult with special needs, please let us know so we can be sure to include them! www.yjphouston.org/events/fcyachallahbake/

TDS will kick off Chanukah celebrations this Sunday with a Pre-Chanukah free community event, open to everyone! Chanukah snacks, kids activities, local vendors to shop and free raffle prizes!

Chabad of Uptown sponsored Chanukah events:

  • Mon. Dec. 26: YJP Houston exclusive Rockets experience for young professionals. First 50 tickets gain access to high five players at the game (JHV article) GAIN ACCESS: www.yjphouston.org

Crowd Surfing the Rabbis 🏄

Good Yom Tov!

Rabbi Yisroel Shmotkin relates: Towards the end of 5728 (1968), I was discussing shlichus (outreach work) with the Rebbe's Chief Secretary Rabbi Hodakov. He said the Rebbe would want at least one Shliach in every one of 50 states of the USA, however it is not possible at this time.

At that time, the official Lubavitch News Service reported the opening of Milwaukee as the seventh Chabad Lubavitch outreach branch of Merkos L’inyonei Chinuch following California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania.

CROWD SURFING CROP.png

This past Sunday, almost fifty years later, the Rebbe's wish has been fulfilled! At the banquet of the annual International Conference of Chabad Lubavitch Shluchim it was announced that Rabbi Mendel & Mussie Alperowitz have been appointed as the new shluchim (and the only Rabbi) to the 50th state to receive a permanent Chabad presence, South Dakota!

crowd surfing.jpeg

The highlight of my trip though, is always the kids. Watching the young shluchim kids gather in 770 for davening on Friday night send chills down my spine as they fill the entire shul, the young army of shluchim. In addition, Chaya and Mendel came to New York for the weekend as well and it was nice to spend time together.

Sunday morning was the annual big kinus "class picture" with the thousands who make in time for the shot. A few of us gave a shot at the the viral video craze, to try and capture a video of the largest mannequin challenge. Chabad Rabbis are always on the move, but, we have to give them credit for at least trying to freeze for a moment or two. A little too far back I froze in a crowd surfing position. Hard to detect in the video, but the NY Daily News got it covered. :)

Tomorrow night is first fridays with YJP Houston Shabbat Dinner & Cocktails for Young Professionals. RSVP: www.yjphouston.org/events/shabbatdec2.
