I’ve Got a Problem with Organized Religion

I have a problem with organized religion. It tells us to light candles, go to shul, eat this, don’t eat that, etc., etc. What sort of G‑d demands these things from us? Surely we can find our own path to G‑d without being told exactly what to do. more...

I never heard of Charlie - did you?

You can change the world!PEACE FRANCE TWO STATE SOLUTION.jpg

I am serious, you can. "Who me? Rabbi, please, I do my small share, but, let's not overdo it!"

Well, it is not overdone. To acquire wisdom, one must observe.

The world is still reeling from the events that transpired in France over last weekend. Just a handful of individuals captivated the world and turned it all upside down.

They succeeded to take "Charlie Hebdo" a virtually unknown paper with a minimal circulation 60,000 to a planned 5 million distributed to long lines for it's first week following the attacks.

They succeeded to bring world leaders together in an unprecedented show of unity to face the common enemy of Islamic extremism.

They succeeded to bring attention to the growing anti-semitism of the Jewish community in France that has been largely ignored.

They even succeeded to get a new comedian, President Jimmy Carter, on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, blaming the Israelis for the attacks in France. Actually he did not mean to be funny, that anti-semite was actually serious!

Just imagine what we can do if even only a few of us, resolved and insisted to not give up and change the world and finally bring the Moshiach.

You never know what deed, act, mitzvah or moment of Torah study and prayer will the be the final cause. As the Rambam writes, one small deed can tip the scale to change the world for good.

Learn how to bring spirituality to this world at this week's classes:

  • Tuesday, 12-1 pm Parsha class
  • Tuesday, 7:30-9 pm, new 6 week JLI course: The Art of Parenting
As parents, we worry about the well-being of our kids; about their future, and about our role in shaping it. In The Art of Parenting, we scale the challenges that face us as parents and explore timeless insights from Jewish wisdom to instill values, foster independence, and ensure the long-term success and emotional well-being of our children.
  • Wednesday, 8-9 pm two part series for YJPBasi Legani Bringing Heaven Down to Earth(dinner class & social)
At this & next week's young professional weekly dinner, class & social we will study the Chassidic Discourse "Maamar Basi Legani". This landmark chassidic discourse defines our generation's mandate of "Coming to Hashem's Garden" and is customarily studied yearly for the Chassidic date of Yud Shevat
  • Thursday at 12-1:15 pm or 8-9 pm, Tanya - Mysticism & Philosophy

PARSHA THOUGHT: This week we will read in Parshas Shemos: "These are the names of the Jewish people". Why the emphasis of names? The Midrash teaches that the Jewish people merited redemption from Egypt because they did not change their names, clothing or language. None of these three are commandments, but, they are what hold us together as a nation. These three characteristics make a nation stand apart to ensure their identity as a people. Names help us remember who we are. Clothing enwraps the person in a sense of "you are what you wear". Language creates a sense of unity, encouraging Jews to mingle with each other. May we all have the spirit to continue this sacred task and in that merit may we see Moshiach's arrival, now!
