Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

Our 13TH anniversary!

Besides for the bar mitzvah number of thirteen, there are thirteen gates to Heaven, though which we pray through thirteen gates of prayer, reaching the thirteen attributes of mercy. These thirteen years have been spectacular, as can be seen in our 13+ years of our website's photo galleries. We are so thankful for each and every one of you, who make this community so special. Thank you for being a part of this amazing experience of Chabad of Uptown.

The Rebbe taught us to never rest, we continue to forge ahead with renewed strength and endless possibilities. Uptown, Upward and Onward!

This Shabbos we kick off February with First Fridays and a Shabbos Mevarchim kiddush - BOTH MARKING 13 YEARS OF CHABAD OF UPTOWN! Please join us!

What a way to close a fantastic week! This past Sunday found Chanie sitting at a table at the International Conference of Chabad-Lubavitch Women Emissaries (Kinus Hashluchos) at the New York State Armory in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, N.Y., together with 3,000 other women emissaries and lay leaders from 100 countries with Chabad presence... The energy was amazing and you can watch the replay of closing session here.

Next Rabbi Chaim's niece Shevi Rosenfeld married Menachem Aron, both from Australia with a wedding in NY! Some of you may remember Menachem who came last year to assist us with the Chanukah festivities....

Tonight the Lazaroff family are in NY celebrating the engagement of Rabbi Chaim's brother Shmuly to Hayley van de Veen from Tzfat

Please join us on Tuesday for the monthly Rosh Chodesh minyan and breakfast! See the full schedule below.

Power of Women

Chanie has joined 3000 physical and spiritual sisters for the annual Chabad women leaders convention this weekend. Every "Shlucha" is a leader in their community. This annual event is an inspiring display of perhaps the largest group of women leaders in the world. You can watch the the annual banquet, the culmination of a five-day International Conference of Women Emissaries on Sunday at 4:30 pm, www.chabaduptown.org/kinus. Chanie's sister Raizy Rubin is the keynote speaker!

Talking about women, the Jewish Herald Voice ran an article this week, featured on the front page, about the women's dessert and discussion help at Chabad of Uptown as a joint project of the Chabad Centers of Greater Houston. Check out the write up and the featured short clip of Chanie's class where you can get a taste of what was shared.

Thousands of Chabad Women Leaders Gather for Annual Convention

More than 3,000 Chabad-Lubavitch women emissaries and communal leaders from around the world are arriving in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, N.Y., this week for multiple days of activities at the annual International Conference of Chabad-Lubavitch Women Emissaries (Kinus Hashluchos). more…

Next week, 26 Shevat, marks 13 years since our inaugural Shabbos, the opening of Chabad of Uptown in 2006. We thank each and every one of you who took part in making Chabad of Uptown come of age! What a journey it has been!

PARSHA: Accessible Judaism

Access seems like an innocent enough word, and an uninspiring enough concept. After all, it suggests that the giver of access created nothing of his or her own, and merely distributed the products of someone else’s genius. But, in fact, an increase in accessibility has been behind some of the world’s greatest transformations and revolutions. more…

Jewish Calendar Notes

  • This week's Torah reading contains the "song at the sea" sung by the Children of Israel upon their deliverance from the Egyptians, when the Red Sea split to allow them to pass and then drowned their pursuers. Hence this Shabbat is designated as Shabbat Shirah, "Shabbat of song." Our sages tell us that the birds in the sky joined our ancestors in their singing; for this reason it is customary to put out food for the birds for this Shabbat (to avoid the possibility of transgressing the laws of Shabbat, the food should be put out before Shabbat). Links: Parting of the Red SeaMiriam: Tambourines of Rebellion
  • Monday is Tu B'Shevat ("the 15th of Shevat") which marks the beginning of a "New Year for Trees." This is the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. Legally, the "New Year for Trees" relates to the various tithes that must be separated from produce grown in the Holy Land. We mark the day by eating fruit, particularly from the "Seven Kinds" that are singled out by the Torah in its praise of the bounty of the Holy Land (wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates). On this day we remember that "Man is a tree of the field" (Deuteronomy 20:19) and reflect on the lessons we can derive from our botanical analogue. Link: Learn About Tu B'Shevat

We did it!

We are so thankful to everyone of the 231 of you who contributed to this campaign! We could not have done it without you! The spark ignited the flame and rocketed into a raging fire of love. May Hashem repay each and everyone of you with tenfold blessings, physically and spiritually.

We are grateful for the many beautiful messages & testimonials shared with us that may be reviewed here.

The giving party continues! Although the #SparkaStory donations will no longer be matched, please consider making your year-end donation at www.chabaduptown.org/donate, supporting the work of Chabad of Uptown and YJP Houston!

The closing of Chanukah was epic, celebrating a Shabbat Chatan with the Melnik and Busany families and ending with the YJP Houston Chanukah Boat Barty. Awesome pics here!

Today, Thursday, Tevet 5 is celebrated as a day of rejoicing in the Chabad-Lubavitch community. On this date in 1987, U.S. Federal Court issued a decision in favor of Agudas Chassidei Chabad regarding the ownership of the priceless library of the 6th Rebbe of Chabad-Lubavitch, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn. The ruling was based on the idea that a Rebbe is not a private individual but a communal figure synonymous with the body of Chassidim. The Lubavitcher Rebbe (Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak's son-in-law and successor) urged that the occasion be marked with time devoted to study from Torah books ("sefarim") as well as the acquisition of new Torah books. Links: Books with SoulsThe Rebbe's Library, Chabad.org online library

This coming Tuesday, Tevet 10 is observed as a day of fasting, mourning and repentance, in remembrance of the siege of Jerusalem. We refrain from food and drink from daybreak to nightfall (5:51 am-5:52 pm in Houston), and add the Selichot and other special supplements to our prayers. (More recently, Tevet 10 was chosen to also serve as a "general kaddish day" for the victims of the Holocaust, many of whose day of martyrdom is unknown.) Complete service schedule below.

Giving Thanks

At Chabad of Uptown we believe in an open-door policy, where everyone is welcome regardless of affiliation, background or financial status. We not require annual membership dues nor building fund payments. Yet, we still have bills to pay. A crucial element of support for Chabad's work comes from hard-working individuals, in our Chai Club, who have committed to a monthly contribution. Your monthly donation adds up and makes a great difference in covering Chabad's operational budget! So today we are thankful for your support and we just want to say: Thanks for giving!  To join our monthly Chai Club visit www.chabaduptown.org/donate and check off recurring to make it monthly!

We are also grateful for those that have included Chabad of Uptown in your legacy planning / will.  Your love of the Jewish people and community will ensure Jewish continuity for many years to come.RSVP and / or get your discounted YJP tickets now for our Chanukah events!

Cat's away, play!

Thank you so much to everyone who shared their heartfelt birthday wishes to Chanie.

The adrenaline only continued with the news that her father had suffered a heart attack, in the ambulance, enroute to emergency care. BH, he is doing well and recovering at remarkable speed. That triggered the need for Chanie to join Naomi for her flight to her wedding in NY, that was leaving yesterday. Well, that turned out to be an adventure, with canceled flights, multiple airports, transferring to airlines that may fly at least closest north so they can then drive to NY in time for Shabbos. All is well that ends well, they got booked a flight to Baltimore and drove a one way rental to NY and are now settling in, in Crown Heights.

The Cat may go away, it doesn't mean its gonna be easy! :)

So, please join Rabbi Chaim and the mice that play while the cat is away for Shabbos davenings, dinner and lunch! Schedule below.

Please join us for the upcoming Chanukah events!

Please say a prayer and join us to wish a speedy recovery to Chanie's father, Shlomo ben Bluma

Mazal tov Alon & Tal Mandel on the birthday of their daughter Shira!

NEW for Friday nights

Now that the clocks have changed we are going to try something new. Kabbolas Shabbos / Maariv will continue to be at 6:30 pm throughout the winter regardless of when candle lighting is. For those who would like to daven Mincha in shul, we will daven Mincha at candle lighting time as well. We use to just hang out until 6:30 pm.  Now, we will introduce a new class: studying the Rebbe's teachings (a sicha) directly from the source text on Friday night, as time allows, between Mincha and Maariv at 6:30 pm.
