This Shabbat is "Parshat Shekalim" is the first of four special readings added during or immediately before the month of Adar (the other three being "Zachor", "Parah" and "Hachodesh"). When the Holy Temple stood in Jerusalem, each Jew contributed an annual half-shekel to the Temple. The 1st of Adar marked the beginning of the collection of the shekalim. In commemoration, the Torah reading of the Shabbat that falls on or before Adar 1 is supplemented with the verses (Exodus 30:11-16) that relate G-d's commandment to Moses regarding the first giving of the half-shekel. Links: The Shekalim Reading w commentaryPartnerCharity: an Anthology

This Shabbat is also Shabbat Mevarchim ("the Shabbat that blesses" the new month): a special prayer is recited blessing the Rosh Chodesh ("Head of the Month") of upcoming month of Adar II. On the Significance of Shabbat Mevarchim

Impossible to get anyone's attention anymore

I made a confession a while back, and recall it now once again as our Thursday evening class has also completed the first section of the Tanya, Likkutei Amarim! Baruch Shehechiyanu, Vikeemanu V'heegiyanu Lazman Hazeh! Join us next week as we begin section two, the Book of Unity & Faith, Shaar Hayichud V'ha'eumah! We have two options every Thursday at noon and 8 pm for studying this monumental work of the Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi.

We have tested and tasted the winning chili, and look forward to winning the official bragging rights on Sunday March 2. We need some more volunteers to join our team to help cook and serve the best chili this side of the Mississippi! Let us know.

As the world speeds up, it's impossible to get people's attention anymore. Once upon a time, you sent mail for a secure response to your notice and message. Once the world was introduced with technology of (this order of) phones, beepers, faxes, emails, AOL, AIM, SMS, Myspace (remember that?!), BBM, Facebook, Twitter, Vine, Whatsapp and the list goes on, no one can pay attention to any source of information. Their solution? Let go of it all and back to the lonely social bubble called the stone age.

Even in emails, it is a miracle you got this far in my rant! First it was text only emails since internet speeds could not handle big downloads. Then, to get noticed, you needed fancy graphic emails. Then, those are all spam - so it is back to plain text. Even this is now archaic. How to get your attention?! So we still spend time and money sending out physical mailers in your mailbox. You should get a mailer this weekend for Purim with Chabad of Uptown... PAY ATTENTION!! :) If you don't get our mail, please let us know your physical mailing address so we can add you to our mailing list.

Tonight is Purim Katan (Minor Purim)! In regular years, the 14th of Adar is Purim, the festival that celebrates the salvation of the Jewish people from Haman's evil decree in the year 3405 from creation (356 BCE). In a leap year -- which has two Adars -- Purim is celebrated in Adar II, and the 14th of Adar I is designated as Purim Kattan, the "Little Purim." There are no special observances, however, associated with Purim Kattan, other than the omission of Tachnun ("supplications") from the daily prayers and a prohibition against fasting or holding eulogies on this day. The Code of Jewish Law cites an opinion that one should increase in festivity and joy, but rules that there is no obligation to do so; "Nevertheless,a person should increase somewhat in festivity... for 'One who is of good heart is festive always' " (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 697:1). Link: Always Happy.
