Mourning then Loving

Tisha B'Av | Movie: Unsettled | Love, Lust & Romance | The White Party

Before we get to this weekend, let's talk about next weekend, TuB'Av. There were no greater festivals for Israel than the 15th of Av and Yom Kippur. On these days the daughters of Jerusalem would go out... and dance in the vineyards. And what would they say? "Young man, raise your eyes and see which you select for yourself...."

So, Young Adults & Professionals!

  • THE WHITE PARTY!Wed. Class: Love, Lust & Romance and knowing the difference. The Torah's view on true love and how to find it. (+ FREE DInner!) Wednesday, August 1, 2012 @ 8:30pm. RSVP PLEASE: Young Professionals classes will now have FREE food for your body in addition to your soul with sumptuous dinners!
  • Next Shabbos: THE WHITE PARTY! Get Dressed in White and share a Shabbat dinner withHouston's Young Jewish Adult Community on this special holiday of Tu'BAv - The Jewish Holiday of Romance. Singles and couples welcome! "First Fridays", August 3 - 8:45PM (Following services at 7:30 pm) RSVP $10 before Wed. August 1 and $18 after that. Join and share event on Facebook here.

This weekend, we observe Tisha B'Av. As the actual day falls out on Shabbos, we do not observe most of the prohibitions, and push it off to Saturday night and Sunday. Included in the mourning observances, we don't eat, drink, apply lotions, wear leather shoes, sit at normal height, learn Torah, shower, have intimacy or go on outings. Click here for the complete guide, readings and insights.

We will have a special program on Saturday night with a reading of the customary Tisha B'av Eicha Lamentations, followed by a big screen viewing of a special film: Unsettled. Join and share event on FacebookThis day is when we traditionally mourn the destruction of the Temple and all the subsequent tragedies to befall the Jewish people.

In recent history we witnessed Israel's disengagement from Gaza. It all began with the closing of the Kissufim crossing when on August 14, 9 Av, of 2005 and the Gaza Strip became officially closed for entrance by Israelis. During the Gaza withdrawal, three young Israelis will be forced from their homes, two soldiers will be sent to evict them, and one activist will try to help her country avoid a war. UNSETTLED is the story of a generation on the front lines of a nation's battle against itself.

Why We Mourn

Why the obsession over an ancient Jerusalemite structure? Does the lack of a Holy Temple leave any of us feeling a gaping hole in our lives?

Is Sad Bad? A world of white

Somehow 45 young professionals packed our dining room last week for a spirited July "First Friday" Shabbos dinner! Make sure not to miss the next one on August 3 for our annual Tu B'Av holiday of romance - THE WHITE PARTY! - Facebook

This year the observance of Tisha B'av is deffered from Shabbos to Saturday night-Sunday, July 28-29 when we will transform darkness of exile, to the white purity of light. If, G-d forbid, Moshiach does not come before, there will be a Tisha B'av Service, inlcuding traditional reading of Eicha-Lamentations - followed by a screening of the documentary film on Israel's 2005 Gaza withdrawl: UNSETTLED.

Tisha B'Av day is when we traditionally mourn the destruction of the Temple and subsequent tragedies to befall the Jewish people.

The weekly Wednesday classes for young professionals will now resume with a plethora of topics, beginning with a class on Wed. July 8 - "Messiah: What Jews believe" - including FREE dinner! Other upcoming topics includes a monthly series on the Jewish perspective on issues of the Election 2012, Creation & Evolution, Love, Tattoos and more. On Facebook here.

Of course, our other regular weekly classes are still on schedule! Sunday, BLT = Bagels Lox & Tefillin (and Hayom Yom), Thursday, Tanya at noon and 8 pm (currently discussing the difference between depression, sadness and seriousness), Shabbos morning Chassidus at 9 am (besides Shabbos mevarchim, see below). If the general community would like a series on Election 2012 from Torah's perspective, drop me a line!

We look forward to greeting you on Sunday, July 15, at the Chabad Regional Showcase at 8:30 pm! Chabad Lubavitch Center, 10900 Fondren Road.

Good Grief! - Is Sad Bad?

"There is nothing as whole as a broken heart" goes one chassidic saying. "Depression is not a sin; but what depression does, no sin can do" declaims another.

Minyan 8 am Sunday for Fast of 17 Tammuz

Shavua Tov! What an inspiring and jammed packed Shabbos!

Tomorrow is the (deffered) Fast of 17 Tammuz, so we will not have bagels and lox, but we will have tefillin!

Due to popular demand over Shabbos, there will be a minyan, tomorrow, Sunday, July 8, at 8 am for the Shacharit service including special selichot prayers and Torah reading for the fast day. Apologies for the late notice, but, we hope you can still join us!

For more on this Three Week mourning period see www.chabaduptown.org/threeweeks.

May Jerusalem be restored to its glory with the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash now!
