20 Av - MY twentieth BM anniversary

Dear Friends,

Here we are, approaching  the days of Awe... It is customary that from the 15th day of Av, we already wish each other a "Kesiva Vachasima Tova", may you be inscribes and sealed for a good year, as we are in the latter half of the month before the month of Elul, a month of repentance in preparation for the High Holy Days.

Your "Life Membership" as a MOTT (member of the tribe) includes:

Be sure to use it and join us for the High Holiday Services at the Holiday Inn - Galleria!

This Shabbos is Av 20, the yartzeit (anniversary of the passing) of the Lubavitcher Rebbe's father, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson (1878-1944), in Alma Ata, Kazakhstan. Rabbi Levi Yitzchak was Chief Rabbi of Yekaterinoslav (currently Dnepropetrovsk), and was arrested and exiled to Kazakhstan by the Stalinist regime as a result of his work to preserve Jewish life in the Soviet Union.

A Brief Biography
Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson's biography, which includes her account of her husband's heroism, arrest and passing.

On 20 Av, exactly twenty years ago, it was also a Shabbos. That year, in honor of my bar-mitzvah, I had the privilege to spend a few hours a mere few feet from the Rebbe's presence at his public farbrengen (public address) in honor of this day, and receive an aliya immediately prior to his. On the following day the Rebbe wished me and my father personal blessings in honor of the occasion. A clip of it appears quickly in the beginning of the "Bar Mitzvah" Living Torah video clip here.

Some of the fast's mourning practices--such as refraining from Torah study other than texts related to the events and nature of the fast day--are observed beginning from midday  on Monday, July 19.

The final meal before the start of the fast, eaten shortly before sunset, is called seudah hamafseket. Only one cooked food is eaten at this meal, customarily an egg dipped in ashes.

"Eichah"--the Book of Lamentations--is read tonight in the synagogue after evening prayers.

We abstain from eating and drinking, bathing, the wearing of leather footwear, and marital relations--for the night and day of Av 9 (i.e., from sundown on Av 8, Monday July 19, to nightfall on Av 9, Tuesday, July 20).

It is customary to sit on the floor or a low seat until after mid-day on Tuesday, July 20.

Torah study is restricted to laws of mourning, passages describing the destruction of the Temple, and the like. The tefillin are worn only during the afternoon Minchah prayers. (For more laws and customs see link below.)
