    Shoftim: The Jewish Kings
The concept that the ideal form of government for the Jewish people is a Monarchy has always been a controversial subject for our people. On the one hand, the idea that a mortal King should rule over us seems to be total anathema to the Jewish mind. Ask any Jewish child with even the most minimal spiritual education who our King is, and they will instinctively and instantly respond “HaShem”. On the other hand, not only does the Torah seem to obligate us to appoint a King, but the fulfilment of two crucial communal mitzvot depends on there being a Jewish monarch: The annihilation of the descendants of Amalek and the building of the Beit Hamikdash both require a King. And yet, despite the mitzvah to appoint a King, when the people approached the prophet Shmuel and requested what would be the first King of the Jewish nation, the prophet displayed intense disappointment and burning anger. In today’s class we’ll examine the original Torah commandment, analyse the Talmudic discussion surrounding it, and see how the Rambam codifies it in Jewish Law. We will also look Shmuel’s response in light of Chassidic teachings. Finally, we will see how we can make the spiritual concepts of Kingship and Monarchy relevant to our daily lives.

Sermon: The Great Argument of Jewish History The argument has been going on for millennia. Should we segregate ourselves and retain our distinct identity or should we integrate and become part of the modern conversation? Our we called to be particularists or universalists? T wo Jews – Rabbi Scales from Benei Berak, and Dr. Fins from San Francisco – debate the big question still confronting the People of the Book in the 21st century. Three words in the Talmud concerning a verse in this week’s portion, Reah, capture the untold story of Judaism.

Close to 500,000 calendar will hit the Safeway / Randalls Stores

JEWISH_CAL_YR2009_4 (2)_Page_1.jpgFive hundred thousand Jewish New Year calendars will be distributed by the grocery store giant Safeway in 1,521 of their Safeway and their wholly own subsidiaries in the USA, namely Vons, Pavilions, Dominick’s, Genuardi’s, Carrs, Randalls, Tom Thumb and Pak ’N Save and in hundreds of Synagogues and community centers in the cities they operate.

I had the opportunity to proofread the Judaic content for the calendars. A write up about Torah Day School of Houston, Chabad and the Rebbe's leadership appears on the inside back cover. Calendar months with JEWISH_CAL_YR2009_4 (2)_Page_2.jpgYomim Tovim will be directed to the Chabad.org website for more recipes, how-to guides, multimedia and fun for the kids throughout the year. There is also a plug to "Share the Light!" on FridayLight.org appearing in the candle lighting page.

The artwork will be our own Houstonian, Deborah Rolnick Raichman.

Over 80% of Safeway's stores are located in Western states. The greatest concentration of Safeway branches is in California with 521 stores (including the 295 branded as Vons), followed by Washington State with 168 stores and Colorado with 122.
