Selecting Life

This week's Parsha, Hashem tells us Kedoshim Tihiyu.... "You shall be holy, for I am holy". To be holy is to differentiate our lives within the world around us. There is a time for dancing and a time for study. There is a time for work and a time for family. Similarly, there is a time for the work week and a time for Shabbos rest. Looking forward to sanctifying the holiness of our time and space, this Shabbos, on an island of peace within time.

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

Let's be as defiant as Goldstein

It has been a tough week, tumbling in from the blissful Pesach island into a turbulent week. First reports of the events in Poway, CA on the last day of Pesach was hard to digest.

We also got word that Chanie's grandmother, Bubbie Fox, passed away on Shabbat afternoon, the 8th day of Passover, at age 93. May her memory be a blessing. Our children loved her very much and cherish their fond memories with her.

Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein emerged swinging, defiant and an inspiration as a national hero for his personal self sacrifice and his call for Jews everywhere to stand strong and tall.

On Monday, the Houston community truly came together for a unity event! A huge crowd gathered at the ERJCC to say we stand in solidarity with Chabad of Poway. All those present joined Rabbi Goldstein's call to increase in good deeds and affixed their label to a banner that read "Houston Stands with Poway" that was filled, rolled and hung in front of Chabad of Poway the very next day! Read about the event in the Jewish Herald Voice.

To add your own mitzvah pledge for the banner, write your intentions on an adhesive label and mail to Chabad of Poway, 16934 Chabad Way, Poway, CA 92064.

The root of the problem stems from education. We need to rethink how our youth in this country are being educated in our schools. See my interview here with Channel 2 NBC. A solution to this may be to revisit how seriously our youth are taking the Moment of Silence in our schools. Listen to this very interesting podcast on the subject. Hear about the Rebbe's vision for a moment of silence, from the Rebbe himself here. Rabbi Goldstein spoke about it today at the Day of Prayer event on the White House Lawn.

Please join the national #ShareShabbat campaign and make an effort to fill every shul to capacity this Shabbat. Any Shul. Of course, Chabad of Uptown's doors are open for you to come and daven. Let's display our pride and not let anyone get us down.

Young Professionals are invited to join us tomorrow night for Shabbat dinner after services, Cinco de Mayo Shabbat!

UPCOMING EVENTS:

  • This Sunday you have the special opportunity to get trained in Mental Health First Aid at Chabad of Uptown. The fee and lunch is paid for - all you need to do is participate! You can still register for the course online: http://bit.ly/2Sip9Wc
  • Ladies! Join the next Dessert & Discussion, this time at The Shul of Bellaire on Thursday, May 16 at 7-9 pm. Pesach mode!

Have we got a gift for you! There is nothing like handmade Shmurah Matzah. Our sages teach that its best to use hand made Shmurah Matzah for the seder, especially for the middle matzah of the Seder plate, the matzah we make th eblessing and fulfill the mitzvah of eating matzah at the seder.

This year we have a special campaign to raise Shmurah Matzah awareness. Please think of whom you can share a matzah with and we have special gift packs for you to use to share shmurah matzah with a Jewish friend. Just reply to this email when you would like to come pick it up from Chabad of Uptown.

Don't forget to:

This Shabbat, the Shabbat before Passover is termed Shabbat HaGadol ("The Great Shabbat") in commemoration of the "great miracle" that happened in Egypt on this day, heralding the Exodus from Egypt five days later. Shabbat HaGadol customs include reading a portion of the Haggadah (see schedule below), which tells the story of the Exodus; it is also customary that the rabbi of the community delivers a lecture in which he elaborates on the laws of Passover and their significance, in preparation for the festival.

Torah it up X3!

This week we take out three Torahs! One for Parshas Tazria, one for Rosh Chodesh Nisan and one for Hachodesh!

As this Shabbat falls on the 1st of Nissan, a special reading called "Hachodesh" (Exodus 12:1-20) is added to the regular Shabbat Torah reading and in addition to Rosh Chodesh Torah reading. Hachodesh recounts G-d's historic communication to Moses in Egypt on the 1st of Nissan (2 weeks before the Exodus) regarding the Jewish calendar, the month of Nissan and the Passover offering. The class will now focus on another area of Torah, halacha. We will start from the beginning of Shulchan Aruch Harav, Chapter 1. Join us!

In commemoration, the Torah reading of the Shabbat that falls on or before Adar 1 is supplemented with the verses (Exodus 30:11-16) that relate G-d's commandment to Moses regarding the first giving of the half-shekel.Links: The Shekalim Reading with commentaryPartnerTzedakah: Charity

Are you ready to laugh?

  • Chanie & Rivky went to interview for a high school next year. Yes, that means that Rivky is graduating 8th grade this year! Wish her well and place an ad in the Torah Day School yearbook at www.tdshouston.org/yearbook
  • Being in the month of Adar, it is an opportune time to celebrate the topic of happiness, as our sages taught us: Mishenichnas Adar marbin besimchah, “When the month of Adar enters, we increase joy.” This is especially so this year, being a Jewish leap year that contains two months of Adar, or sixty days of joy.
  • Next week is Purim Katan on Monday-Tuesday, Feb 18-19. We will have a farbrengen on Tuesday at Chabad of Uptown at 8 pm. See below.
  • Purim, we will really have you laughing with joy! Read on....

Rabbi Chaim & Chanie

Our 13TH anniversary!

Besides for the bar mitzvah number of thirteen, there are thirteen gates to Heaven, though which we pray through thirteen gates of prayer, reaching the thirteen attributes of mercy. These thirteen years have been spectacular, as can be seen in our 13+ years of our website's photo galleries. We are so thankful for each and every one of you, who make this community so special. Thank you for being a part of this amazing experience of Chabad of Uptown.

The Rebbe taught us to never rest, we continue to forge ahead with renewed strength and endless possibilities. Uptown, Upward and Onward!

This Shabbos we kick off February with First Fridays and a Shabbos Mevarchim kiddush - BOTH MARKING 13 YEARS OF CHABAD OF UPTOWN! Please join us!

What a way to close a fantastic week! This past Sunday found Chanie sitting at a table at the International Conference of Chabad-Lubavitch Women Emissaries (Kinus Hashluchos) at the New York State Armory in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, N.Y., together with 3,000 other women emissaries and lay leaders from 100 countries with Chabad presence... The energy was amazing and you can watch the replay of closing session here.

Next Rabbi Chaim's niece Shevi Rosenfeld married Menachem Aron, both from Australia with a wedding in NY! Some of you may remember Menachem who came last year to assist us with the Chanukah festivities....

Tonight the Lazaroff family are in NY celebrating the engagement of Rabbi Chaim's brother Shmuly to Hayley van de Veen from Tzfat

Please join us on Tuesday for the monthly Rosh Chodesh minyan and breakfast! See the full schedule below.
